What is the exact text of the error message? What changed between the
time things worked and the time they didn't?

Try a repair install*.
otherwise:-
Boot to Recovery Console**.
type:
cd system32
ren winlogon.exe winlogon.old
ren msgina.dll msgina.old
ren shell32.dll shell32.old
ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi.old
After this you need to copy these files from your cd to your system32
folder.
cd.. [enter]
cd servicepackfiles\i386 [enter]
copy MSGINA.DLL c:\windows\system32
copy SHELL32.DLL c:\windows\system32
copy WINLOGON.EXE c:\windows\system32
copy shlwapi.dll c:\windows\system32

type Exit [enter]
