This box is fine, but I can no longer access it from a 2nd (Win2k) PC over
the network. The client in the second PC asks for user ID/Password,
I provide it with the my logon credentials on the XP box and it fails.
Shouldn't this work? Is there something I have to do on the 1st box ?
TIA for any info
You need to create an account/password on the Win2000 PC that matches your
account/password on the WinXP machine. You must then use this account when
logging on to the Win2000 machine.
Is it XP Home or XP Pro?
If it is XP Pro, try enabling "Simple File Sharing"
(Double-click any folder -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View ->
Last checkbox at bottom

Regarding Pegasus' point - prior to resetting the XP PC's security, Windows
2000 was able to
access the shares on the XP box in the workgroup without a problem.
The account name did not match the XP account name,
but somewhere along the line the client in Win2k had asked for the password,
and I gave it the logon/
password I use when I logon to the XP box. Now I'm trying that again, but
it's not working.
I looked in the event viewer hoping to find some diagnostic message, but
nothing gets logged on
either box. Any other way to gather some more info ?
Logon Failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type
at this computer.
Does it help to identify the problem ?

On each WinXP PC, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will be
able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall is
disabled on the internal LAN connection.
Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

On the win2k box when I try to access one of the XP shares it pops up a box
where I can enter "connect as" and "password".
I enter DAVEH and dave1234 and it says incorrect password or user name.
From the CMD box, if I enter NET VIEW \\XP-BOX-NAME
I get system error 5 has occurred.
