Required section not found in the INF

In the course of reinstalling my Canon printer (MF4350d) I have consistently
run into this error message once I have installed the Canon drivers, which I
have done multiple times in the past few days trying to get my printer
working again. The Canon techs threw up their hands and said it is a
Windows problem. I am using WinXP SP3. Printer was working fine until we
made the mistake of trying to udate the drivers which required uninstalling
the current drivers thus putting me in this goofy neverland. Any
suggestions? I am on the verge of reformatting the hard drive for want of
any other inspiration and basically starting over. That's a ton of work and
since I have no idea why this error appears, I have no real confidence that
it will make a difference. (There may well be other reasons to reformat,
like I have so much stuff running andno idea what the heck it is...) What
is an INF? How would I recognize one? How can I tell if I have all the
"sections" in "the INF?" And if a section is missing--as the error tells
me--which section would that be and can I get a new section to add to the
INF? Do I just get a new INF? If so, where?

Run disk cleanup and clear your temp files. Disconnect your printer, reboot
the PC
Visit Cannon site, download / install the drivers

INF is just an extension, like INI. INI usually stands for
"initialization" and .INF usually stands for "information".

Here's what I would do: Disable your antivirus, firewall and other
malware protection, and try the install again. Also try the install in
Safe Mode.

Thanks! No offense taken. I noticed thatou pointed me to a Canon European
site for driver(s) where my printer seems to be called iSensys MF4350d
instead of Image Class MF 4350d. I have my original install CD and Canon
sent me a CD with the drivers today and I had also downloaded drivers from
their (USA) site. Did you mean to recommend the drivers fromthe European
site over the others?

Does the error message really say:

The required section was not found in the INF

I don't think you would just go and get a new INF anyplace.

Do you see this message during installation of the driver/software or
does that seem to go okay and you see the message during operation?

Any indicator lights indicating?

Printers and other external devices can be very picky about how they
are installed - like do not have the device connected while installing
the drivers/software. Canon is such a beast. Do things in the wrong
order and you might be in for some frustration.

I suppose you can try some of those things or maybe even a System
Restore but you had it installed before, or you can go to the Canon
WWW site and download the drivers and install them according to their
documentation, I would figure out how to make it work in case you
need to reinstall it again some day.

For example, your printer software installation manual says:

Do not connect the USB cable before installing the software. If you
connect the USB cable before installing the software and the Found New
Hardware Wizard screen appears, click [Cancel].

But we don't know if you are connected via USB or not, so that may not
apply to you. The point is, the devices are very picky, the
instructions are usually very correct, and since you are trying to
reinstall, that means it was connected at one time, so you need to
disconnect it now if you are reinstalling the software - just like it
was never there in the first place. Reboot your system, etc. to make
sure XP does not find anything hooked up.

Answer a few questions, do a download or two, follow the directions,
etc.

Make sure no trace of the printer shows up in Add/Remove Programs and
XP does not even think it is installed. Start over from as close to
scratch as you can get for this printer. Reboot f you do any
deletions or removals.

points all along (I have used it previously) but it quit doing so.
The error message appears after installing the drivers without the printer
connected. The install part goes without a hitch--you have t uninstall the
drivers first. Once a message appears that they are installed I exit the
installation software, reboot and then plug the printer in. The message
appears about 30 seconds later. And yes, that's what it says. There is
other language in there but this is the gist of it. No lights blinking that
I could detect.

I was being facetious about System Restore... However, we can fix up
your SR after this if you would like.

I meant if you do not prefer European things of course.

Since SR is broken and used to work, I would do a scan for malicious
software too. Something broke your SR.

Reduce the chances of malicious software by running some scans.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

These can be uninstalled later if desired.

Did you uninstall the drivers from Device Manager or some other
method?

Did you download the software from the Canon WWW site - it looks like
they updated their stuff 11/09ish... Maybe their new stuff is somehow
defective - do you have an installation CD that you think might have
worked before?

From what I can Google, this seems to be a "printer thing" and not
necessarily a Canon thing. I can usually fix those HP printer things
when those bunch of girls at HP through up their hands and suggest
reinstalling XP.

Maybe somebody else will have some other good ideas.

I know this part is boring, but I hope you will do it anyway:

Please provide additional information about your system:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just
delete it from the pasted information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.

There may also be clues in the Event Log and here is how to post them
if that is the case:

Look in the Event Viewer for clues around the time of the incident

Here is a method to post the specific information about individual
events.

To see the Event Viewer logs, click Start, Settings, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

A shortcut to Event Viewer is to click Start, Run and in the box
enter:

%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s

Click OK to launch the Event Viewer.

The most interesting logs are usually the Application and System.
Some logs may be almost or completely empty.
Not every event is a problem, some are informational messages that
things are working okay and some are warnings.
No event should defy reasonable explanation.

Each event is sorted by Date and Time. Errors will have red Xs,
Warnings will have yellow !s.
Information messages have white is. Not every Error or Warning event
means there is a serious issue.
Some are excusable at startup time when Windows is booting. Try to
find just the events at the date
and time around your problem.

If you double click an event, it will open a Properties windows with
more information. On the right are
black up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the open events. The
third button that looks like
two pages on top of each other is used to copy the event details to
your Windows clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred around the time of
your issue, click the third button
under the up and down arrows to copy the details and then you can
paste the details (right click, Paste
or CTRL-V) the detail text back here for analysis.

To get a fresh start on any Event Viewer log, you can choose to clear
the log (backing up the log is offered),
then reproduce your issue, then look at just the events around the
time of your issue.

I tried drivers from the Canon website, the CD they sent me today and the CD
that came with the printer. I uninstalled the drivers using Add/Remove
Programs, plus a tech walking me through the registry and a bunchof files I
did not comprehend to eliminate anything referring to Canon. I have also
removed them using Revo Uninstaller (which purports to clean up all the
leftover pieces) I had also tried scanning with my A/V, a few Adware
programs, Registry Cleaners etc.

An oddity: The driver loaded in Safe Mode (I got the INF error later) but
per another error message the MF Toolbox installation was "interrupted."

If you are comfortable going into the Registry with the Registry Editor
(regedit.exe), open it and navigate in the left pane to this key:

Does that key exist or is it missing?

If it exists, highlight the {4D36E979-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key
in the left pane, and look in the right pane.

There should be 6 entries in the right pane, all of them REG_SZ types.

The 6 values, and their data, should be:

There is no key starting with 4D36E979. ONe starts with 4D36E978 followed
by several keys with a letter in place of the final numeral, e.g., 4D36E97B,
C and D and the next is 4D36E980. WHen I search the registry I see a few
examples of that key (the full key name) in some other parts of the registry
but not at the location you specified.

Did you DELETE/UNINSTALL the working drivers or merely install new ones? If
the latter, you can roll back to a previous driver.

Well, that likely the cause of your problem....you need that registry
key and its contents.

You can manually create the "printer" key ad then the 6 String values,
and then the data for the values (along with the "scanner" key if it is
also missing) by following the steps in SOLUTION 1 on this page:

you can copy and paste the lines below (between the dotted lines, and
including the blank spaces at the end...important!) into Notepad, and

If you are using an old CD, maybe it is now out of date since many MS
updates may have been installed since your successful printer
installation.

I actually want to do that. I just wanted to advise DL that his suggestion
had no effect. In response to your suggestion (in a separate thread) I had
posted a question or two--and my interest in your offer of a zip file to
replace that registry key. I am depressed that my printer has been out of
service because of this--and I have to fly to California tomorrow on
business. Can't take the printer with me so it's not the end of the world.
But until I get the printer back in gear I can't print anything to take
along.

Sorry, I was not very clear. Yes, I uninstalled the printer each time. And
I tried (1) the original CD that came with the printer; (2) a CD Canon sent
me a day or so ago; and (3) downloading from their download site with a
Canon tech on the line. THe result was always the same.

Earlier this evening I cleared the Event Log and then installed the Canon
printer using the recent Canon CD. Same failure, of course. When I looked
at the event log I saw a warning and an error but these had no discernible
connection with Canon or printers as far as I could tell.

Kudos to Glen Ventura. I have been dealing with the failed to install issue for several Laserjet 1020 printers for over a year. My issue actually starts with "Spoolsv.exe, Office 2007 will not start, no printers", and fixing it as in MS KB312052. After the deleting the printer from the registry, the re-install is chancy at best. After searching and trying several drivers, Glen's solution was/is the only one that works.
Why doesn't HP have the solution in the their 'solutions' or FAQs?; to provide a Printer Diagnostic that doesn't work if the printer can't be found, is pretty lame.

They do have it in their HP Solutions, but apparently only listed as a
solution for the error, "The required section was not found in the INF":

It should probably be in an HP FAQ for advanced troubleshooting.
Contact them and tell them.
