Fix your Caps Lock ky and you won't have problems. The updates install just fine 'here'

im not sure what updates, but i do know its the latest security updates. my
case #1124815903 I just got off the phone with them.. and not by choice..
the SUPERVISOR hungup on me:) they started saying "its a hardware issue its
not the update" and so forth. they tried to do the boot from disk. but guess
what. i cant boot from disk because of the update. so they told me to go to
my manufacture or go to a pctech. and have them fix it.. i asked if they
would pay for it, they said no, that they couldnt help me.. they were rude. i
was really nice. considering i couldnt understand em much, because they are
Pakistanians. but i was still nice. until they told me to speak english,
shutup, and called me some not so nice names :). i told them "its not a
hardware issue, considering everything ran perfectly fine, until the update,
and considering everyone in my town that has xp has this problem" they argued
with me, and hungup. so im pretty ticked off.

People will both hear your concerns better, and take them more seriously,
when you stop yelling.

Your sentence above, for instance, is entirely understandable, while one

If you can't boot to disk
It may be that your BIOS set's to boot from Hard Drive first
Go into BIOS
Usually F2 on start up
and switch the order of boot preference to CD-ROM before HD
and then you should be able to boot to CD

A failed update can't "fry" your hard drive, and it can't keep your computer
from booting from CD. Only hardware failure can do that. Set the BIOS boot
order to boot from the CD drive and put your XP disk in the drive and reboot
the machine. When you see "press any key to boot from CD" press any key.
Follow the instructions in this KB article to perform a manual System Restore:

an update won't FRY your hard drive
If you put that Hard drive on another PC
you will be able to see the data on there
If you can not READ data off of that hard drive
This was not an Update that caused it
It was a hard drive failure

Just because your engine blew up while your car radio played a Beatles song
does not mean that one caused the other. It was pure coincidence, same as it
was pure coincidence that your hard disk failed during or after a Windows
Automatic Update. You need to get rid of your conspiracy theory that Bill
Gates is after you.

If the update breaks your computer and if the link to the fix is the
solution (has anyone verified the fix on a broken system or is it just
a "given"), boot Recovery Console, uninstall the update and be on your
way. I have the update and no problems but maybe we here are not a
member of the non-trival group afflicted.

If you do not have a bootable Windows CD to get into Recovery Console,
that that is not the fault of MS. If you didn't get an XP CD with
your system, you should get one when this is all over.

If you need to boot Recovery Console, make a bootable CD, or if your
system has no CD drive, make a bootable USB device that has RC on it.

If you have no XP media and need to make a bootable Recovery Console
CD to uninstall the update, here are instructions to make one.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic276527.html

Making a bootable USB device varies, but your hardware vendor probably
has instructions. This is not a new idea.

I would not implement KB307545 just for this piddly update - unless
uninstalling the single update (a few seconds or time) doesn't work.
That is just my opinion.

If you have no way to boot your system from other than the HDD to deal
with such things, it would be a good idea to learn how or find
somebody that knows how to help/teach about the problem.

Ouch! Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if type normally, in
mixed case.

If you type something in all caps, especially something as long as
that, it makes it very difficult to read. I won't take the extra
trouble to read something like that, and neither will lots of others
here.

I still have yet to have any of my Clients PC's Report this
and they run 98% of XP....

Try this Leave the HD Completely out and put the CD in
(It should BOOT to CD
or ask you to hit a key)

It should find the CDRom and Boot to it.
If it doesn't find your CDROM and you've changed the BIOS to boot from the
CD
then you have some how fix that to try the fix.

On the others?
You said they have replaced the HD already?

Seems a little extreme..
They couldn't boot from a CD either?

i have a cd.. and it works when i install it on peoples pcs.. but when i try
to boot from disc.. it wont work.. and ive tried to boot using both cd/dvd
players in my computer.. it just wont let me. when i do try to boot up using
the disk. i get the bsod. and that is my problem, microsoft said they could
fix it for me since it was the update that caused it. but they cant fix it bc
for some reason just like alot of other people i know, it wont allow them to
boot from disc.. and my harddrive is inaccessible.. i can take my hd out..
put it in another pc.. and it wont work... and yet it worked perfectly fine
until that update. im sorry but i dont believe it was coincedence, how could
it be when 20+ people i know or have talked to are going through the same
thing.. not to mention practically everyone who has xp is having the
problem.. hence why its all over the news on the internet. heres another new

You are doing it incorrectly. From your description, you are still
booting off the hard drive!

You need to configure your BIOS so that you boot off the CD:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

What is the make and model of your PC? Certain PCs allow you to enter a
boot menu without needing to enter the BIOS. (For instance, Dell PCs
allow you to press F12 to accomplish this.)

So you say that you place "a diff hd in it" and it will then boot from the
CD?

A simple yes or no will suffice.

You are making this very difficult; you *still* haven't answered about
the make and model of the PC!

Assuming you did configure the BIOS correctly, when you see this screen:

http://www.pcxmedics.com/blog/images/clean-install-xp-1.jpg

... you need to press one of the keys on your keyboard in order to boot
off the CD!

If you did press any key and you wind up getting the BSOD, this means
you are *still* booting off the hard drive. Perhaps you need to use a
different keyboard.

I know for a *fact* that MS Support engineers are actually driving to
some folks homes and picking up their computers in order to get to the
bottom of this issue
http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2010/02/12/update-restart-issues-after-installing-ms10-015.aspx

" In order to get the information we need to fully analyze the issue,
some of our support engineers have actually driven to customer locations
and picked up affected systems so we can get the needed crash data
directly and help inform our investigation. "

The issue is NOT affecting the *vast majority* of XP Users but IS
affecting those whose systems already *have malware present*.

Specifically, it's a variant of this malware that contains a rootkit:

Win32/Alureon
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?name=Win32%2fAlureon

i do not have malware on my computer. Im a programs manager for a company, i
deal with the program aspect, and ive never had any problems with my
computer, i take really good care of it, i run a virus scan a couple times a
day, and i assure you, that i did not have any viruses at least until i did
the windows update, because before i did the update i scanned and everything
was good. and now since the update i can not open windows, im stuck at the
safe mode screen, which never ends and my pc keeps restarting, and i cant
boot from disk, when i do i get the bsod. with a long error message.

Maybe he can help?

Will you explain to her that rootkits can not be detected by routine
antivirus scans, Russ ?

The affected HD will not allow the CD player to load Windows.
A new HD does because it does NOT have the rootkit present whose
"functionality" was crippled by KB977165, thus making booting from CD
*inoperative*.

That's a pretty clear indication that a rootkit is present on the dead
HD and explains why the CD player would not load Windows after the
update was applied.

I'm done trying to convince her.

It is *never* possible to be sure you are not infected with malware,
for the following reasons:

1. Some anti-virus programs are much better than others.

2. No anti-virus program is perfect.

3. There are new viruses all the time, and you are always vulnerable
to viruses that hit the field *after* you last did an update to your
anti-virus program. The anti-virus programs are always a step behind
the latest new viruses.

4. Some types of viruses (most rootkits) aren't caught by any of the
standard anti-virus programs.

Moreover, you say you run an anti-virus program, but you say nothing
about any programs that detect other types of malware, such as
spyware.

Correction on the previously posted variant of Alureon -

Win32/Alureon.A
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Virus%3AWin32%2FAlureon.A

" When the infecting trojan is run, it infects a system driver, usually
'atapi.sys'. It has also been observed to infect 'iastor.sys' but other
system drivers may also be targeted.

Hides files and disk sectors

The system driver detected as Virus:Win32/Alureon.A is infected by the
addition of code, whose function is to load a part of the Alureon
rootkit. The Alureon rootkit is a component that gives Alureon the
ability to avoid detection; it is created by the same Alureon trojan
that infects the system driver.

The rootkit loaded by Virus:Win32/Alureon.A has the ability to avoid
behavior blockers, which allows it to perform its malicious routines
uninterrupted. It can also hide files and disk sectors. "

MowGreen,

Well, when someone claims an update Killed the HD
it's hard to convince of anything....

And it's not a conspiracy from Microsoft.

And this is not global, other wise I'd have a TON of people calling me.
(Everyone single of my clients.)
And I wouldn't have any sleep for the last 3 days...
(And I'd be calling MS also.)

As of now I'm still sleeping at nights....
(So it doesn't affect all PC's)

That being said.....
We still need to go back to the fix.
(Of trying to boot off a CD)
Which doesn't seem to be possible?
????
Which is why I suggest a Local IT Professional to help get the boot to CD...
Then we can move on...

Hmm...

What I saw is above.

Did you see something different than your direct question (snipped by you

answer (given in the requested format)?

Or is this a top vs. bottom posting troll?

That reminds me

When I was a PC manager at Intel
And people were running out of HD space
(Back in the 500MB Hard Drive Days)

Since Intel would not pay for "UPGRADES"

I told the person to issue a Support call and say
"My Hard Drive is Making Noises and I'm worried about it dying"

Then I could have the Tech put in a bigger hard drive :)

Its funny,, people say it wasnt the update. the update wouldnt cause the
problem that i couldnt boot from disk unless i was infected. but its funny,
because no matter what xp disk i tried to boot from, it would not boot... but
yet i put vista or 7 in, and it would boot. so therefore it wasnt a hardware
issue, it wasnt me not having my bios settings correct. im a very careful
person, i have antivirus, and programs to check for malware & spyware &
adware, and i run multiple scans daily, yet there was nothing there. im still
pretty convinced that it was a bad update, and am going to be. considering i
know alot of people personally that have this problem.

no matter what i did, xp wouldnt boot from disk, i checked bios settings &
checked multiple disks.. and it still wouldnt boot from disk. but yet the
minute i put vista in, it booted from disk no problem.. so it wasnt a
hardware issue.. because how could it be a hardware issue if it boots other
disks besides xp? so therefore, i installed vista. and now my computer works.
people argue that it wasnt the update that caused it, and say "its your
hardware" or "the update did that because you had malware" im sorry but i
dont think so. my hardware was and is fine. also i take very good care of my
pc.. i have antivirus, good firewall, and ANTI adware, malware, spyware
programs. that are actually trusted.. so until im proved otherwise, its an
update issue.. i just think its funny and ironic, people tell me its a
hardware issue, or i dont have the settings correct, when it works perfectly
fine with an os that isnt xp.. or the fact that i personally know alot of
people who have this issue, that couldnt boot from disk on 10 xp disks. but
can boot perfectly fine on one of the newer os'.. and they were all told the
same from microsoft.. that it was hardware, virus, or their fault. that it
wasnt an update.. and people constantly argue that its not the update, that
people dont have that problem.. but if anyone googles "bad xp update" or "bad
xp update bsod" its all over the internet. people asking for help.. people
not understanding how come just a minute ago their pc was fine, downloading
updates, and the next its crashed, stuck in a reboot loop, they have the
bsod, and cant boot from disk. and everyone that cant boot from disk such as
myself and a few people i know.. lost everything on their harddrive unless
their willing to pay 1200 or more, according to size of the harddrive..

A disk is hardware, so the logical conclusion would be that the disk has
failed in one capacity or another. Disks *do* fail, in case you haven't yet
heard of such a thing.

What freely-available tests have you done to verify the disk's integrity?
Being M$, of course there are any number that you can pay for.

I typed:

I forgot to add that since you can successfully boot from other M$ disks,
why not jumper the troublesome one to "slave" and retrieve the data off it
that way, if possible.

Amazing it is that you would have attempted booting all those "other disks"
without doing the obvious slave jumpering, but at my age that requires cheap
imported reading glasses from the $1 store.

Then use the hard drive maker's utilities to check the condition of the

again. If it still won't boot, but the Vista and 7 disks do, the problem is
in the optical drive and/or the XP CD itself. Also, you never answered the
question someone else posted whether or not the machine would boot the XP CD
without a hard drive installed; that would certainly answer a lot.

As for problems with updates, there were two inthe past IIRC but they were
some time ago and were quickly corrected. In fact, they were pre-SP3.
I'm also not sure I see the connection between updates and booting from
an XP disk. Somehow any useful information that might have been part of the
