I want to scan a picture into word97 using my HP 4370 ScanJet. Could not
find option of "From Scanner" under "Insert" --> "Picture". Apparently I
must need some sort of Word97 Add-On. What and where is the add-on? Is it
on the Office97 CD? Same applys to Excel97.

Also, does microsoft sponsor a Word97 / Office97 discussion group? If so,
would appreciate a link.

Best to ask the experts in an MS Office newsgroup.

Assuming you have Irfanview.
File>acquire
When scanner has finished scanning, the picture will be "transferred" to
Irfanview. You can then copy and paste into Word. You can also save as .jpg,.
bmp etc.

It doesn't matter what scanner or WP you use. You do things
*separately*, trying to do everything at once from one app is
bound to be complicated and give less than great results.

You scan text as a bi-level (black and white, NOT greyscale)
image at 300 dpi, and you scan images as greyscale or truecolor
at 200 or 300 dpi. Scanning at 100 or 96 (Windows screen res.)
will give you terrible results.

You need to clean up and resize the image in any decent
image/paint program, apply something called "unsharp mask" to
make it sharp (I know, the name makes no sense) since images
lose sharpness after resizing, and then you save it (in whatever
format your application will accept) in the suitable directory.

Are you capable of doing a search for those terms (use no
spaces) in the *.rc grouplist in your newsreader directory? (*
standing for the name of your provider or whatever name you gave
the group list when you set up your machine.) Then you'll know
not only whether MS "sponsors" them - which may or may not be
the case - but more importantly, whether you can access them via
your Usenet provider.

I don't know how else you can do it in "Microsoft CDO for
Windows 2000" since I never heard of it until I saw a few posts
in this group. In a regular NR you would just click "show all
groups", put "word97" in the search filter and all groups your
provider carries with that term in the title would show up.

Also, have you looked at the

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/

page?

There are 2 big search boxes in the middle of that page.

you might want to use a
graphics program to acquire
the image, then save, then
insert into document.

if I recall windows has a paint
program built in.

you should practice with it or
another graphics program
before trying to directly import
the acquired image into a document.

You won't find a Word97 or Office97 news group AFAIK

There is Word97VBA group but not really what you need.

Why not simply scan the picture to file then in Word or Excel
Insert>Picture>From File

In news:39100DC1-A7EE-4679...@microsoft.com,
PSRumbagh <PSRu...@discussions.microsoft.com> typed:

The addition of the "scan" menu item in Word is a function of your scanner
installation/settings. It's called, usually, "registering" programs for the
scanner. Word97 is old enough that it's possible it's not supported by
scanners anymore, but have a look anyway. In my last scanner installation
it went out for and found a bunch of programs and let me check mark the ones
I wanted the scan capability added to.
IIRC and it's been a llong, long time, the scan menu item in Word97
wasn't in the File menu; it was in the Insert or some other menu; you might
want to check those over too.
