Seems Java is causing errors with my pc. Every time I try to uninstall it or
try to reinstall the full offline downloaded version from www.java.com I get
the following message.

"Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows
Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for
assistance."

I also tried it in safe mode but the same message came up.. can anyone help?

Are you able to install/uninstall other applications ?

Check if Windows installer service is running and its startup type is set to
automatic.

Start | Run, type services.msc and look for Windows installer.

In a safe mode, windows installer service will not be running so if a
program makes use of this service to uninstall itself you may not be able to
do it from safe mode.

It seems he has a entry in add/remove programs which when tried to remove
results in the errror.

He may be referring to Java SDK package.

i am having this same problem...and windows will not let me remove this
particular version of Java JS2E runtime environment v5 02 - it tells me
"cannot install - you have this version, please uninstall it 1st" ???? And
thats what i'm doing - trying to remove- but its trying to install
instead...but yet when i try to load anything that requires Java - it wont
run.... Opera gives the message "not found or not working", Firefox gives me
a toolbar "add'l plug-ins are needed..." and then offers update for java, i
accept it, it tells me i already have it, i try again, it tells me i need it
again....IE wont even open a Pogo link or anything associated with Java. I
am at my wits end, can anyone help?

Seems like the java package installed already is corrupted but still has some
reference in registry which prevents reinstalling it. We had seen similar
error for IE installation which needs some registry edit.

Back up registry before attempting this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Method:
Access registry editor. Start | Run | regedit.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components.

You will find entries similar to {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383},
click each of them until you find JRE. Once found, look for Isintalled key
and change the value to 0. Restart the computer and try again install JRE.
