I just built a new computer with AMD 1.4GH, 256MB Ram and
installed windows XP three weeks ago. For some reason my
computer keeps automatically restarting after I quit my
games. However, if I alt+tab out of the game and close it
from the desktop it doesn't restart. This happens with
Baldur's Gate II and Mechcommander 2 (The only games I
have on my computer). Has anyone heard of anything like
this? I haven't installed any other large programs to see
if it does this when I close them. Please help!

Sounds like a video card problem most probably with the driver, what video
card are you using?

Mine reboots occasionally in the middle of a game. Today it did a complete
reboot in the middle of heated battle in Mech Commander 2. I am running an
AMD Athlon 900 mhz, 256 megs ram, Asus 7700 Geforce 2 w/32 megs ram. I am
currently using the Asus beta 2250 drivers. These are more stable than some
I've used. The official release ones on the Nvidia site are not good in a
number of my games. The only issue I have now is the reboot problem similar
to yours. I'd like a solution on this also.

Thanks,

This is an very known problem.

It is discussed at debth at:

http://forums.viaarena.com/categories.cfm?catid=13

I have one suggestion for you to try - then you can deside, whether
you want this permantly.

It's going to degrade system performance, because it in effect sets
your AGP port to a PCI port (of if you wish, runs the AGP port at x1),
but I've had similar problems, no nVidia drivers helped.

Try System properties --> Device Manager --> System Devices

Take the:

VIA Tech CPU to AGP controller

choose properties --> Drivers --> Update Driver.

Choose to:

Install from a list or specific location (advanced)

Choose to:

Don't search. I will choose the driver to install

Choose to install:

PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge.

This solved it for me - If it helps you, at least you know what is the
matter, the Via AGP drivers, there is a lot of debate about the
subject
on the Via board.

Another way of solving it for me, was to remove one of three 256 MV
sticks from my computer - why this helped I don't know, but it has
helped others too, but not all, try the VIA board, it gives some
ideas.
