benefits of purchasing xpe license (dev phase)

Hi,

I need to componentize my application. I started with xpe sp2 tools
trial version for development.

I am looking for have additional docs, samples, and tools related to
CMI scripting, finding xpe components for my application's dlls /exes,
build automation etc.

Will purchasing xpe sp2 license help?

What tools (open source and otherwise) can be useful in finding xpe
components for my application's dlls /exes, build automation, and
other steps that will need to be done in the future.

What service pack of Xpe is common in the production environment?

Hi Mike,

for development I would look into the MSDN subscription
"Visual Studio Professional with MSDN Embedded". Cost is just short of
�1300 or whatever that is in USD.

Can't say I'm impressed with the development environment though. I do my
Windows development work on W2K3 Server ('cause the machine sits
remotely in a rack and I can log in over terminal server from my quiet
thin client). It took me nearly three days to get everything working.
Once I got it installed all my image builds failed with some typically
obscure MS message. Googled for it, binged for it, uninstalled,
reinstalled (the only suggestion I could find on a MS newsgroup).
Nothing helped.

In the end it turned out you have to be an adminstrator to build an
image on W2K3 (conclusion from one of Sean Limings remarks in this NG).
I'd love to know who thought that one up at Microsoft (Or did it just
'happen').

A license only gives you the ability to ship a product and download updates.
Other information you have to find in books, online posts, and classes. CMI
scripting has not been released by MS. Very little information exists with
the exception of a script file they provide. Filters can be used to find
components that contain specific OS binaries.
