Hiding desktop icons in XP Pro

I like my wallpaper uncluttered. Usually hide my desktop
icons and work from the task bar. Always before in XP Pro
when I right tap the desktop and choose "Arrange Icons By",
I get a menu including "Show Desktop Icons". Turning that
off hides the icons. Now I have a new copy of SP Pro on a
new computer. When I access "Arrange Icons By', there is no
"Show Desktop Icons", although many of the other familiar
commands are present.

Is there another way to hide desktop icons in XP Pro?

Grateful for any help or advice.

Russ

Russ--

You can use a regedit or 3rd party app to get this done:

1) Iconoid by Sillysot: (Free Download)

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/r1064364201

2) Two regedits that will do it from Winguides:

Hide All Items on the Desktop
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/147/

Change Desktop Icon Visability
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/7/

Chad Harris

You cleared the Shell Enhancements on the IE tab of Tweakui 1.33 (terminology was different in earlier versions of Tweakui), can't see an equivelent setting in Tweakui 2 (the XP one), Also turn on Classic Shell in Group Policy editor

Chad,

You are really trying hard in the groups, as I have noticed. However, you
are seemingly, in most cases taking the long way around things. Reason
being, you are not familiar enough with what you are answering (case on
point - Start Menu shortcuts, etc).

Stick to what you know well and post away. :o)

Sorry Kelly--

I forgot about the check in start menu properties for favorites 4/23/04--I
should have visited it first. When I realized soon after, I had no way to
delete the post. Hopefully in *most cases*, I'm not taking the *long way
around* including some of the keyboard combos and links for regedits/tweaks
for getting things done.

Thanks,

Chad Harris

Select your post, Message Menu - Cancel Message. Sometimes it needs to be done twice. This deletes from the server so only people who have already downloaded it will see it. Whether other usenet servers honour the request is up to them. It will pull your post from most people's view of the group.

The options disappear when Active Desktop is turned off by Group Policy or a tweaking program.

David--

Thanks a lot, and thanks for the heads up with reference to GP/tweakers.
That was sure one that needed cancelling. I'd scrolled those checkboxes a
lot, but not lately enough, and didn't remember favorites was one of the
boxes so I dragged them over. I should have looked.

On your post comparing the features of Tweak UI 1.33, and Tweak UI XP 2.10,
one option to use features no longer in the one for XP is to have them both.

okay don't use the remove desktop icons from any menu it
will slow your system down trust me I did this. First all
icons that where installed by programs just delete they
are on the start menu anyway. you should be left with 5
icons My computer, Recycle bin, network Places,Ie, and My
documents. Okay now right click the screen click
backgroung tab , customize desktop. You should see option
for 4 of the 5 there just uncheck them and clicl ok .
there gone. 1 Left recycle bin fire up tweak ui and under
desktop unclick reclcle bin and hit appy all done nice
clear desktop. Without the performance drop.
