I anticipate there won't be any way to stop it, as when I asked a few
months ago if there was any way to stop it "helpfully" opening
(expanding) folders when you hover over them with something you are
about to drop, there were no answers (lots of helpful alternatives and
suggestions, thanks, but no-one knew how to stop it).

Britain is still a class-ridden society. As soon as a man opens his mouth, we
can tell in what sort of school he missed his education. (George Mikes, "How to
be Decadent" [1977].)
The easiest way I know to do that would be to make the left pane wide enough
that the contents all fit within it. That will stop most of the shifting
