I recently dumped Avast! antivirus because after an update it would not allow
me to access my e-mail, so I replaced it with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Now the Windows Security Centre keeps telling me that I have no virus
protection, but when I go to Microsoft Security Essentials it tells me my
system is protected.

Is there any way of telling the left hand what the right hand is doing?

I suggest that you [temporarily] turn off MSSE (double-click on it's
taskbar icon to open MSSE's interface, goto 'Settings' tab, set the
Real-time protection to "off"), then download and run the Avast Uninstall
utility, from the Avast website: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
You should then be able to turn MSSE back on.

If there is still a problem, you *may* also need to re-install MSSE (as
improperly uninstalled elements of Avast may have prevented MSSE from being
installed properly). If you really want to be certain 'first-time', then,
instead of 'turning-off' MSSE (real-time protection), uninstall that before
running the Avast removal tool.

However, in my opinion, the first suggestion of turning off MSSE's
real-time protection, should be sufficient. The important thing is to
download and run the Avast Uninstall utility, and follow all on-screen
instructions it may give...

You may also find that you still have problems.
I have several machines where the security center intermittently does
not recognize that MSE is operating. Rather than look at the red shield
I restart MSE through services.
