A bug in Notepad

Run Notepad and type in this text:

hi mum how are you

It must be exactly those characters. Save it as text.txt, and close
Notepad. Now double click the new file. What do you see?

(For some reason, Notepad thinks the file is Unicode.)

This must be the first bug in Notepad for about a decade or maybe
longer. I haven't checked the knowledge base.

The bug appears to be on your computer. No problem at all when trying it on my system.

Try and cut and paste what he put Sir_George and not type it. I cut and
pasted it and saved it to my desktop as text.txt and when opened I got solid
square blocks instead of text. When I typed it it was fine.

Curiously, I got what appear to be Traditional Chinese characters. This
may be because I habitually install the capability to view Asian characters
when I install IE. (And this is after I ensured that the file was being
saved as ANSI text.)

I get the same bug; [XP HE]

Type those words, save the file, reopen it and they're block characters....

What I'd like to know is how this bug was discovered..... ;-)

Same problem here, but try right clicking it and do Open with... Wordpad
instead.

Your text encoding might be intentionally or accidentally set to different
from Operating System, you might be typing in non-Western mode or in UNicode
and when it saves satuff converts to your OS probably Western. In Notewpad
check Format->font->script, then go check your WIndows encoding is it the
SAME??
