I installed the SP3 on two of my computers, but cannot get it to install on
the third. I keep getting a message that says "An error occurred while
copying file beethov9.wma. Cannot copy file to destination directory." When
I say I want it to continue anyway, I get a message that says "Ensure that
the location below is correct...
windows\software distribution\download\dd9ab519350h84c...etc.
This has happened three times. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Open the svcpack.log located in WINDOWS. If you see entries similar to
the above one, then there's a Permissions issue. Please post all of the
entries that show the above 00000005 error and include the paths
( Ex: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\Sample
Music\Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (Scherzo).wma )

Is this XP Home or Pro ?

Thanks for the reference. I read that, and several dozen related things, but
still can't get it to work.

I do have a documents folder that I, the administrator, apparently do not
have access to. According to what I read, I should go to the folder
properties and open the security tab. But there is no security tab when I go
to properties. One reference said that in that case I should open folder
options then view tab then uncheck Use Simple File Sharing. But under folder
options there is nothing like this. I cannot find anything that says "simple
file sharing."

Again, any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Microsoft Windows Service Pack 3 problem Basically the SP3 installer can’t
write Beethov9.wma because it cannnot find the path: C:\Documents and
Settings\All users\Documents\My Music\Sample Music The solution involves
logging in as Administrator and take control i.e. ownership of the \Documents
folder and altering folders inside to create the needed path. Instructions
for gaining control are here:

That's because this is XP Home Edition.
You can access the Security tab by booting to Safe Mode and logging on
with the Administrator account.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents <--- this is the folder
that needs the Permissions edited.
The Administrator account should have all Permissions checked except for
Special Perms.
System should have the same settings as the Admin account.
Everyone and Power Users have the same settings EXCEPT for Full Control.
The above settings are when Simple file sharing is Enabled.

Simple file sharing *should* allow access to the Documents subfolder.
Folder Options > View > Advanced settings
Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list to enable simple file
sharing.

I had the same problem. And needed to take the following steps to finalize the install.

1. In explorer D&S\all users\(there was no documents folder showing-with show hidden files)
2. Command prompt: D&S\all users\documents (if still not showing attrib -s -h)
3. attrib -s -h in the now showing \documents folder
4. delete *.* (in the documents folder, be sure there is nothing there you need first)
4.5. \documents now shows in explorer
5. Give administrator full rights.
6. install SP

Had Microsoft help on the line for three hours, they couldn't figure it out, kept stopping. This thread got me started on the correct path. I think possibly the desktop.ini was bad or there was a crapped file, forgot to look before delete.

FOUND THE FIX MYSELF.

As many, I did not want my computer to blue screen because I disabled
restore points, and I did not want to restart during the middle of the
installation.

The problem is that sp3 cannot copy beethov9.wma to the sample music
folders even though you may be logged in as the administrator.

Do this: go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ and find the "shared
documents" folder. Now right click and look for the "sharing and security"
option. If you don't see it, it means that your permissions are screwed up or
your are running winxp home edition, and so you won't see it anyways. Hell,
you won't even be able to open the folder even though you may be logged in as
administrator.

The work around is: go to tools>folder options and go to the "view" tab.
Scroll all the way to the bottom until you find "Use simple file sharing
(recommended)" uncheck the option. Hit apply and ok. Now go back to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ and right click on the "shared
documents" folder, you will see the "sharing and permissions" option at this
point.

Right click on the "sharing and permissions" option and go to the "security"
tab, if you don't see anything in the "groups or user names" box" then you
need to add yourself. If you see "administrator" anywhere on that box click
on it and make sure the "full control" option in the box below is checked.

If there is no one in the box click on the "add" button. LEAVE EVERYTHING AS
IT IS. Now in the field below, aka the empty white box type in
"Administrator" (Or whatever your login name is), click the button right next
to it "check names" and if you spelled it right it will automatically format
it for you, in my case it said "computername\Administrator". Click ok.

At this point there your login name (in my case Administrator) will be in
the "group or user names" box. Select your entry, and make sure the "full
control" option is selected below. Click apply and Ok. And close all the
windows and go back to the halfway completed installation of SP3.

Now look for the beethov9.wma file in the sp3 source files, select it, click
retry, and the installation will complete as usual

Hi-
I am looking through all these posts and trying to figure out what to do.
I also am getting the Beethov9.wma 'won't copy' message.
I am the administrator, BUT can NOT access the docs folder under all users.
Can you please tell me where EXACTLY to go to find this: Folder Options > View > Advanced settings
This is XP home addition.
All help is greatly appreciated.
