Having problems getting windows update to work

When i try to update windows it goes to check then comes to choose "express"
or "custom"
it doesn't matter which one i choose it comes back and says

"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem"

When i choose click register or reinstall the files for me now it

says down loading ... 100%
then registering .... 100 %

but then returns back to the screen above.

it doesn't matter whether i choose "express or custom"

I have checked all the settings, i have also checked that my original XP
Home has been activated. (it says that it has). It came on the Acer laptop,
only 2 months old.

Any help would be appreciated..

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

I found this works well with fixing the update problem, but it also fixes
problems associated with other programs, such as MSN Messenger not connecting
and giving no information on how to correct the problem. After following the
steps listed in this posting, I was able to update windows and also to
connect to the messenger service.

I think he was commenting on TaurArian's answer which is in another
thread so it couldn't be included in here anyway.

I too have encountered this same update problem.

It's an Acer Aspire 3500 laptop with XP Home SP2 installed. It was already
late when I started attempting Windows Updates last night and after a couple
hours of trying this and that with no success, I went to bed quite frustrated
and thinking that the next thing I would try would be a manual download and
reinstall of SP2.

Fortunately this morning I continued my search of this news group for others
with this problem and discovered this series of posts. I can hardly wait to
get home and try out your suggested fix. Thanks!

Wish me luck. I'll let you know if it works.

Ok! Went home over lunch and tried it. The first command did the trick.
Hopefully now it will "stick" so I don't have to do it every time I go to
Windows Update. Anyone know for sure?
