After updating my system from Windows XP Home to Professional, I receive the
following error each time I boot my system:

Cannot Install this Hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware:

HID Non-User Input Data Filter

An error occured during the installation of the device

Fatal error during installation

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 5100 and the mouse that is giving me the
trouble is a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 1.0A. So far, I've
tried the following:

- Rolling back the driver to a prior version.
- Installing Microsoft Intellipoint 6.2 software.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I just ran Windows Update and tried installing the fix for this problem.
Unfortunately, it would not install and gave me Error Code: 0x80070643.
Anyone know what this means?

Thanks!

I have been through all that Martin did and with the same results. In
addition, have done a repair install of WIN XP-SP2 with all the attendant
problems (now solved) and still I get this problem. Don't know where to turn
short of format HDD and complete reinstall, because the New Hardware message
comes up and fails on every reboot. However, the MS Wireless Laser Mouse
5000 seems to function without problem. Think that problem could be related
to a defective file downloaded by Microsoft update (since never has to
download it before failing) ... any way to delete such a downloaded file?

Hi there,

It sounds like a driver update has occured which messed up the USB settings.

Hopefully you did not take any non MS driver(s) from windows update?

Never take drivers from windows update unless they are intended for
Microsoft hardware.

If an updated driver is needed because the hardware does not work proper go
to the manufacturers website to look for an updated driver.

If it ain't broke: do not try to"FIX" it.

If you did take the optional drivers from windows update try booting last
known good configuration, rolling back on the driver or use system restore
in safe mode prior to a date of the problem or restore from the full system
backup you hopefully made.

Assuming you are using Windows XP: here you can see how to roll back on a
device driver:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/driverrollback.mspx

You can disable the update in question appearing when automatic updates is
set by going
to the windows update website and unmark (hide) driver in question.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Michel ou RéalC'estMoi: Equipment that triggered the Windows Update is
Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000; associated software is Intellipoint 6.2.
As noted this was after a repair reinstallation. This HID Non-... etc was
on prior to that time without problem. Drivers themselves for device OK;
just this constant attempt to install HID Non-... at every boot (or every
scan for new hardware, which I use to bring SCSI device online after turning
them on or hot-plugging SCSI drives)

Hi there,

Try deleting the Intellipoint drivers and re-install them and see if that
solves the problem.

I have already done this twice without benefit. This error has no
perceptible effect on the only USB device that is attached, the MICROSOFT
mouse! I have also tried both disabling and deleting the HID item that
shows up in the device list as unknown device but it reappears on the next
boot. It's so unknown I have searched all over the physical machine and
cannot find it. I have loaded / installed the latest Intel drivers and BIOS
for the machine which has an Intel Pentium D processor and an Intel D945GNT
motherboard.

I have hidden the (already downloaded) update named above which shows up in
Windows / Microsoft Update, which always fails when applied. >>>>>> If
anyone knows how to remove the download from the machine, that would be
helpful ... perhaps a fresh download might work. <<<<<<

Otherwise I shall live with this until my next format of my system C: drive
and install which will take place in about mid-July. It would be nice to
know where the downloaded updates are stored so that one doesn't have to go
through downloading 100+ updates every 4-6 months when I do a full install.
Fortunately all my data and applications are on other drives.

Hi there,

I am sorry not te be able to be of more assistance.

If it was my computer I would make a repair installation an update windows
again skipping the update in question and all should be fine. Make sure to
hide the update in question on the windows update webpage.

Good luck and best regards,
Michel Denie

Thank you, Denis, for this and the prior response. I think that you are
probably right that a subsequent repair install is the only way to correct
this. I probably should have done that right away rather than fool around.
Usually I follow a list of steps from the previous install so that I do
things in the right order but I didn't this time --- thought by now that I
knew it all --- oh well, we live and learn! Thanks for your help.

I went into the same problem. Look into your Windows directorye for a log
file named wfd01005Inst.log (or similar) updated at the time youried to

Open this log file, it should allow you to see what caused the install
error. In my case, I found "FileVersion of
E:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\wdf01000.sys is Greater Than 1.5.5600.0".

Thus, I renamed the wfd01000.sys file, ran the update again and voilà !, it
went fine, no more error !

I restarted Windows, no more New hardware Install failure message...

Out of curiosity, I checked the file wfd01000.sys installed by the update,
it was exactly the same than the old one.

Hope this helps

Yes! Laura! Cheers!

A possible surmise of the underlying cause ... I repaired my system after we
changed to daylight savings time but the XP SP2 assumed the old date for
start of DST, and it still thinks its DST. So the time-stamps of
wdf01000.sys as replaced differ by one hour.

After beating my head against the wall and reading ALL of the posts of people
having this problem, and no one giving a solution, but a few were able to
lead me down the right path.

HERE IS THE SOLUTION!!! (at least it worked for me!)

Go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers and delete wdf01000.sys

Then, go to windows update, and select Custom. Then select hardware updates,
and HID non-user Input data filter should be there again. Now select
download and install, and it should enter the correct information and fix
your HID non-user Input Data Filter Error / fatal error / failed to install
problem.

Thank you crakaz!

Got a new computer, ghost of Hard Drive it was XP Home.
Upgraded to XP-Pro and issues started the same as the other posters.

HID non-user Input Data Filter Error / fatal error / failed to install
problem.

This caused issues with the HP 3380 Laser jet scanner and Microsoft wireless
laser Mouse 5000/Keyboard 4000/receiver 3.1.

The HP 3380 Laser scanner would communicate with PC but not execute the
scanning process. The print functions worked.

Secure an install disk from HP for laserjet 3015/3020/3030/3380 v4.0 is for
XP, call HP and ask for v4.0, they will send it to you. They don’t recommend
downloads for installation. Once you have the hard disk, Uninstall the HP
3380, insert the HP install disk v4.0 and find scrubber.exe and run it. Now,
install HP 3380 as per set up instructions.

Note: You can save your fax and printer settings before you begin the
Uninstall and Install process, you will need to go to the HP Toolbox. Go to
“Status Tab” and find “Print Info” on left side and click. Print all your
information before you call HP so you have your SN # and all the info they
will ask as well as the set up info. HP 800-474-6836 To save your
Printer/fax settings click the “Fax Tab”, left side to “Detailed Fax
Settings”, next on right click “Fax Setup Wizard”, top tab click “System
Settings” tab, go down on left side click “Save and Restore” to back up
settings or restore them.

HID non-user Input Data Filter Error, followed the solution from “crakaz”
and deleted:

> > HERE IS THE SOLUTION!!! (at least it worked for me!)
> >
> > Go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers and delete wdf01000.sys

I didn't have to do anything further as this cured the issue. Don’t now for
sure but maybe the driver for the Wireless mouse receiver 3.1 was already
there as it didn't appear on the hardware update list. Plugged in the
receiver and heard the clunk-clunk and it worked with no errors.

Thanks and your fix worked.

I got rid of this annoyance by hiding the update and rolling back the

Ive got a microsoft wireless optical mouse/keyboard combo. It really is

crakaz/Eric Whiteman's solution worked great.

However, before I could delete the file I had to take ownership of it.
Here is a great site to show you how to take ownership and get full
control over a file in your system (Win 7):
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/how-to-delete-a-system-file-in-windows-vista/

In short, here are the steps:

1) Start
2) Type "CMD" (without the quotes) in the search bar
3) Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter key combination
4) To take ownership of the file, at the command prompt type or
copy/paste the following: takeown /f
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\wdf01000.sys
5) To get full control of the file in order to delete it you have to
enter the following at the next command prompt: cacls
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\wdf01000.sys /G johnsmith:F
6) Please note that "johnsmith" in the above command needs to be
changed to YOUR username.
7) Close the command prompt.
8) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and delete the file

If you're like me and the computer told you that you need to get
authorization from yourself, then do the following:

9) Right-click on the file -> Properties
10) Click on the "Security" tab
11) Click "Advanced" (by where it says "For special permissions or
advanced settings, click Advanced.")
12) Click on the "Effective Permissions" tab
13) Click "Select" (next to the box for "Group or user name")
14) In the box with the header that says "Enter the object name to
select," type your username exactly how it appeared in command prompt
(for example, "johnsmith\john smith")
15) Click "OK" and then close the box.
16) Click "Apply" and that's it. You should be able to delete the file
now.

Updates installed with no problem after that.

Yes it still shows the error message. By the way, I'm using XP Pro not
Vista.
It still shows up when I roll back the driver. It's a right PITA. I
think I'll go out and buy a better mouse/keyboard combo. This Microsoft
set is useless. I'll NEVER buy Microsoft hardware again.

I only bought it because my Logitech mouse died on me. There's another
problem. Did you know that you can't buy a replacement for a failed
mouse/keyboard from a combination set? They are "factory encrypted" and
they claim not to be able to supply areplacement.

Profits, I suppose. What is the world coming to?

Your solution did the trick for me.

Plus, the simplicity of it adds to my continuing amazement regarding MS
programmers and tech writers. How do they earn their salaries? The fixes
they come up with are invariably meant for IT types, not end users. >> Their
fixes also make my head hurt.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to pass on your solution.
