Hello.
I have problem with Windows Update within my XP 64bit SP2.
Recenty I reinstalled my system and installed Windows and update normally.
But after that first update, I can't access Windows update anymore. I
automatically redirects the
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us to the old
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp site.
All I got is the notification Windows Update Error. No error code, just that.
I tried couple of things but nothing works (clearing cache and setting of
IE, unregistering and registering some DLLs, reinstalling
WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe etc.).
Is there a way to change somewhere the old v4 site link to the latest one v6?
Does anybody has suggestion for me?

Hi there, did you clear the softwaredistribution folder, sometimes this is a magic cure as
there are redirection files/folders contained within -

Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Then take a look at this article (ignore the title if need be) as it gives some
instructions on reinstalling the WU Agent etc.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

TaurArian,
thank you for the tip, but I've done it before and now again following the
steps you suggested, but it didn't help.
It still connects to old v4 site.

Hi,

Could you please send me the user agent string from your machine that is
experiencing this issue.

The user agent will be found at the following register entries

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings, User Agent

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

This we help us look to see what the issue is.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft

This "redirection" probably involves IE's User-Agent so I like your suggestion
of Ramesh's fix to a previous poster for a related symptom... ; )

Hi Robert, interesting theory - along the same lines so to speak -

If anyone wants to check out Ramesh's fix for redirection -
Windows Update page says "Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates
from our site."

Good news.
Problem has been solved.

Simply deleting the whole *User Agent* key (attention, i say *key*, not
string) in

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet

No more redirects.

None of these suggestions did it for me. Any others? I went with windoz
support and the guy who was "helping" me was totally clueless about 64-bit
systems so I thought I'd check back here.

Empty Internet Explorer's temporary internet files, History, and all
Cookies. Also, suggest you check the Hosts file located in
WINDOWS\SysWow64\drivers\etc to see if the update sites have been added
to it. Delete them if present.

If no joy, go here, download and *save*: AU Check (v78a)
Once the download completes close *all* open browsers and programs.
Temp disable the installed AV/security suite. If need be, consult the
User Guide or visit the manufacturer's web site to learn how this is
done. All processes and services of the above need to be temp disabled.
*** IF a 3rd party firewall is being used then Disable it and Enable the
native XP firewall. The system must be connected in order to download
required updating software components. ***

Now run au_check_v78a_codeplex.exe and allow it some time to complete
it's operation.
*** Reenable any 3rd party firewall if one was disabled and then Disable
the Windows Firewall ***
Restart the system now.

Is the issue resolved now ?

Nice application that took minutes as opposed to hours to complete manually
but unfortunately, still no joy. Not only am I redirected to v4 but I also
now have "Administrators Only" error lol But I appreciate the effort,

AU Check sets the Permissions unless 3rd party software interferes with
it. What is the installed security software and was it *completely*
disabled when AU Check was run ?

Open the AULOGS subfolder located in the root drive [the drive where
WINDOWS is installed to, usually C:\] Extract the contents of the
data.cab as you would a .zip file.
Drill down and open WinHTTP_log.txt and gpresult.txt.
Post their contents into your reply, please.

I use Antivir and did disable the Guard which is about all you can do without
uninstalling Antivir. I didn't notice any conflict with AU Check. I often
disable the Guard when installing software or adding updates and never
noticed a problem.
You should know that I used system restore after getting the "Administrators
Only" error but the log you requested is still available:

Lock pages in memory
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190730.aspx

> Locking pages in memory is not required on 64-bit operating systems.

I'm not sure if that's the cause of the issue but, why did you enable
that setting ? Are you working with an SQL database ?

Antivir *usually* does not interfere with the installation of core
system updating components.
Forgot to ask if you checked the hosts file ... did you ?
Also, check to see if there's an lmhosts file [not lmhosts.sam as that's
just a sample file]. If there is, open it and see if it's pointing
towards the v4 site.
One thing we do know ... some 'thing' is definitely redirecting the
system to the old site.
Give this a shot, please. Go to Start > Run > type this into the Open:
line and then click OK or press Enter

wuauclt /detectnow

Wait about 3-5 minutes or until no activity is showing in the local area
connection icon. Open the WindowsUpdate.log and post at least the last
50 or so lines of the log into your reply, please.
Open the WU.log from Start > Run > type in, then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

BTW, was this a clean reinstall of XP or a Repair Install ?

First let me thank you for your continued help MowGreen. Although this
update thing is not critical (I still get automatic updates) it is plaguing
and I'd like to resolve it.

I cannot for the life of me recall why the lock pages in memory was set but
I stopped it, did a cold boot, and afterward tried windows update, but still
get the redirect.

Hosts file is clear of any reference to windows update; it's one of the
first things I checked and continue to check to be sure lol

I have no lmhosts file outside the sam file.

This was a fresh install on a new hd and has been extremely stable ..

Here's the windowsupdate.log as you requested showing the latest run:

Rose,

The issue you describe may possibly be caused by the need to register an
xml.dll. Give this a shot ... click Start > Run > type in the below and

then click OK or press Enter

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

Try to update link in the Start Menu. If the system fails to update,
*right* click the Windows Update link on the start menu and choose
Properties.
What's in the Target: line ?

And, thank you for sticking with this thread. We may have run across a
bug with 64 bit XP here, billcat. After looking at various MSKB
articles, the only thing that I *think* may pertain to this issue is:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310794

> NOTE This issue can be caused by any software that changes the default security provider. It is not
> limited to Dell computers or to the Dell Assistant software.

Be sure you back up the registry if you decide to try the steps listed
under 'Reset the default security provider in Windows XP '.

The Target Line in the start menu Update link was
C:\Windows\Syswow64\rundll32.exe C:\Windows\SysWow64\muweb.dll.LaunchMUSite

Acted on the Start>run regsvr32 msxml3.dll and the response was that the
registeration of the dll was successful

The Update Link target line remains the same information as above after this
regsvr32
Clicking on Find Target in this update link property sheet goes to the
C:\Windows\Syswow64\rundll32.exe

When I used that start up link it starts out using the path which includes
V6 - http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
It is there long enough in the browser bar that I can copy and paste that
path with V6 but it quickly redirects to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

An interesting turn of events when I tried to "Reset the default security
provider in Windows XP" .. I do not have the Cryptography\Providers keys
under either HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\ or
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\

Could those keys be elsewhere in xp x64? I looked but couldn't find them.
I know that registry changes exist between 32 and 64 bit flavors but I
thought it was limited to how software is handled under local machine.

Also I notice now that the "Administrators Only" error is recurring at
windows update .. *sigh*

A file is redirecting the system to the v4 site. Possibly, the self
update file, wuredir.xml. Here's the link to AU Check that I forgot to
include [Doh !] previously:
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=17263

If you already have it, use the instructions previously supplied as in
regards to security software/3rd party firewalls prior to running it,
Rose. Restart afterwards and the system *should* be able to update now,
key word being *should*. <w>

Re. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310794
I gave a cursory read-over of the information under "Reset the drive letter
of the system drive" and that reminded of something that may have to do with
this problem. When I installed the system I didn't have drivers that were
recognized by windows. I forget what the error was but I allowed install to
continue anyway until sometime later when I was able to find updated, working
drivers. In order to enable AHCI without reinstalling windows I had to pull
the boot drive and temporarily connect it as an external eSATA drive. The
drivers were then easily installed and I could make adjustments to the bios
accordingly. Swapping the drive back to internal SATA, however, apparently
changed something in the mbr and I was asked to revalidate windows. I don't
know whether this marked the beginning of the windows update problem or not
because it could have been some time before I noticed it.

Those keys don't exist on my XP Pro box either. So, they're not what's
causing the issue. What you posted below is the most probable cause.
That's why Windows needed to be reactivated. The fix for this is risky,
billcat. I'd hate to recommend it and then have the system fail to boot:
How to restore the system/boot drive letter in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188

Doing the above may retrigger activation, too. Suggest you check to see
if \DosDevices\C: is set correctly but do *not* edit the subkey without
reading the " WARNING " under Summary and
Unable to log on if the boot partition drive letter has changed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249321/

Frankly speaking, the *safest* method is to just wipe and reinstall.

MowGreen, you've helped a great deal and I appreciate it. I've learned a
couple of things here that have proved valuable. I'm actually itching to try
this restoration of the boot drive letters lol but I'd rather wait until the
system actually needs a wipe when I won't mind (so much) having to reinstall.
As mentioned the system is very stable as it is and windows update just
isn't that big a problem since automatic updates work fine. I'll keep you up
to date when it happens by dropping a note in the thread and until then,
thanks a lot for your efforts. Cheers :)

Followed instructions shutting down Virus scanner and Tea Timer from Spybot
Actived the AU check-
downloads were successful, install was successful.
Clicking on the Update link in the start menu went to the V6/default address
The page was a long time loading and I think it was just busy.
The update log indicates the X64 system is successfully updated.
Contents in the SoftwareRedistribution/Wuredir show no change in date or
size.
The registry information did not change either.

Overall, I believe things are in order at the moment and if I cannot get to
see the Windows Update page its not a major issue.

Thank you for the directions. I'll not apologize for tagging into this
thread because I was being redirected to a different address and now there
is not redirection.

Did you or did you not download/run AURESET, Rose?

What anti-virus application is installed and is your subscription current?

Did you fully disable Spybot Tea Timer? See
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=32409

NB: If you don't fully understand what Tea Timer does and how it does it,
leave it permanently disabled.

You weren't being redirected. You'd enabled Email Notification for both
your original thread and this one; You happened to have opened the link to
this thread, not your own thread. Yet another example why multi-posting in
different threads leads to confusion.

I mean that when I clicked on the Microsoft Update link the connection would
start with one path which included V6 and then it would change to V4
(M.Green used the word 'redirected')
Now after using The Aureset the path does not change and I arrive at the
update page.
The automatic downloads were occurring it was just that the Microsoft update
page would not load and it did not display an error code. Only a text notice
'This page cannot be displayed'

You're mowst welcome, billcat. As long as the system updates
automatically, I wouldn't bother wiping and reloading either.
As to the MSKB articles previously mentioned ... frankly, I don't mess
with changing boot drive letters. The risk is more then the reward is if
the system can still update automagically.
If you'd like, try to access the Microsoft Update Catalog using IE:
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx

All Security updates issued on Patch Tuesday are listed in the Sec
Bulletins found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

And, all updates issued each month for 2008 can be viewed here:

Best of luck to ya

Has anyone solved this issue? I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm not
sure if the automatic updates are working since I have not seen one since the
issue started. I recently installed .NET Frameworks 3.5, VS 2008 and SQL
Server 2008. That's when the issue started. At first I couldn't get the
update to work at all. All I got on the update page was "Windows Error!"
(not very helpful). I downloaded and installed the latest windowsupdate
agent for xp x64 and then got the Administrators Only message.

I am logged in as a domain admin and domain admins is a member of local
machine Administrators but the only thing that works is if I run the update
as a login of the local machine with Administrator permissions.

I agree with everyone that this is not a showstopper but it is very
annoying. I have a fairly complex installation (I'm a data architect with
lots of tools) and I don't always want to get every update that's out there
but I would like not to have to "run as" every time I want to check for
updates. ...and I would like to know that my critical updates are being
downloaded automatically.

Anyone know if there is a solution for this yet?

I have resolved this issue on my XP x64 system.

I agree billcat. The MS support guy had me registering x86 dll's. When he
directed me to download the x86 version of windowsupdate I called him on it
and he told me that his support tools don't distinguish between x86 and x64
systems. This was after I had already sent him a .nfo file which clearly
shows the OS as XO PRO x64.

The solution:

1. Stop and disable any antivirus tools (including services) I use avase
and there are 4 services (2 automatic, 2 manual).

2. Reset IE - Open IE. Select Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Reset.
Note you will lose cookies and toolbar settings.

3. Restart in safe mode and rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to
SoftwareDistribution.old or delete it altogether.

3. Restart in normal mode. Select Start | Run and type services.msc. Make
sure Automatic Updates services is started. Right click the Automatic
Updates Services and select Properties |Log On. Make sure the Log on as
Local System account is selected and the Allow service to interact with
desktop is unchecked. Select OK or Cancel if the settings are correct.
Check the properties to make sure Startup type is set to Automatic and the
service is started.

4. Check the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. It should have the
same Log On properties. Startup type should be set to Manual and the service
should be started.

5. Open IE. IE will consider this your first start and will prompt you for
your search engine preference. Select your preference and continue. You
should be prompted to install Windows Update. If not then just select
windowsupdate from your menu. You will be prompted to download and install.
Just follow the prompts. When Windows Update is reinstalled it should work
fine. It did for me.

6. Restart your anti-virus services

You'll have to re-establish any IE related toolbars or cookies (passwords,
etc.) but it was worth it for me. Hope this works for you.
