I was unable to use the windows update site; it stated I had missing files
but it will not reinstall them. Is there a way to get these necessary files
with out using the restore cd and loosing all my information?

exact error message: Files required to use Windows Update are no longer
registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

-- the register or reinstall gives another error: The website has
encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The
options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

If you need to reinstall the Automatic Updates service, follow these steps in this
article -
You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
requested page" error message when you try to install an update

In case you get a 0x80070005 error when trying to do "regsvr32
MSXML3.DLL", the following worked for me, on a Windows 2000 Pro system:

0. Turn off virus protection temporarily.
1. Do a search for msxml3 on your entire system.
2. Delete *all* files containing msxml3, which in my case was
msxml3.dll, msxml3r.dll, msxml3a.dll.
3. Restart.
4. Download and install the latest msxml3.msi from Microsoft's web
site.
5. Try Microsoft Update and see if it works.
6. Repeat 3-5 if there are any complaints from any of the programs.
7. Turn virus protection on again.

Worked like a charm for me. Perhaps it is time for me to move to Vista?

Simply typing this DLL into the run box worked for me [Running XP] after
countless options and even Dell support !

I have tried everything on this post, to resolve the same issue. Nothing is
working. What else can I do?

Thank you

Options -

1. Start your own post instead of hijacking a 2006 thread with symptoms
similar to your own problems. Please also state your OS including SP level
and if appropriate whether you're updated to IE8.

2. Perhaps this is relevant (if appropriate ignore the title) - Updates are
not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or
you repair a Windows XP installation
