Hi,
I get this error when connecting from the office. From home DSL works
perfect. But I don't understand where is configured this proxy isa11. Of
course, is not on IE->tools->connection->lan settings. I also search on
registry and no trace of isa11.
Maibe Lucy [MSFT] can help me.

Here's a part from WindowsUpdate.log

Hi Dragos,

First try this:

1. Click on Start/Run
2. Type "cmd" (w/o quotes)in the open box to get to a DOS prompt
3. Type "proxycfg -d" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
4. Type "net stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
5. Type "net start wuauserv" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
6. Now try the site again.

Any change?

I need to look at the log. Error 0x8024402C is typically accompanied by
another error.

Can you please create a new post and paste the last 20-30 lines of the
WindowsUpdate.log file (no space)

Thank you,
Lucy [MSFT]

Hi Lucy,
There is no proxy configured on my system:
C:\Documents and Settings\dragos.staicu>proxycfg
Microsoft (R) WinHTTP Default Proxy Configuration Tool
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Current WinHTTP proxy settings under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\
WinHttpSettings :

Direct access (no proxy server).

But I found the problem
wuauserv.dll was version 2149 but the other wu* was 2160.
I delete wuauserv.dll and reinstall activex from WU site.
Now it's working.
I don't know why wuauserv.dll wan't updated along with other components.

Thank you.

I also found this file was outdated after reading this post. I was getting an error installing one of todays patches. fyi - months ago I tried installing WUv5 on a sp1 system with unsupported link. Now I can't downgrade to v4! oh well.

I have an on going series of problems with WU v5. Initially installed it over
a month ago and it worked fine. Then, the update software updated itself and
I have gotten the 8024402C error ever since.

Initially had a problem with the wuauserv.dll file being out of date. Fixed
that and was able to get back to WU v4 and all worked well until I was
automatically redirected to v5 and WU software updated itself and got the
8024402C error.

Fixed that problem by deleting the wuweb.dll and got back to using v4 again
until I was automatically redirected to v5 and v5 software updated itself and
got the 8024402C error.

Fixed that problem by deleting the SoftwareDistribution directory and
updating the trusted sites for the WU v5 sites. That worked and allowed me to
go back to v4 which worked fine until I was redirect to v5 again today and
the v5 software updated itself and I got the 8024402C error again.

I have reinstalled iuctl.dll and that has not solved the problem. What can I
do to get rid of all of the v5 and reinstall a fully clean version? I have
included here the latest windowsupdate log file.

Hi,

Can you please try the following?

Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list and then clear the
proxy cache.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools, select Internet Options.
3. Click on the Connections tab.
4. Click on the LAN Settings.
5. Click on the Advanced button.
6. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section.

Next, clear your proxy cache.
1. Click on Start, and then click /Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type proxycfg -d at the command prompt, and press Enter.
4. Type net stop wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.

6. Now try the site again.

I should also add that you really shouldn't delete wuweb.dll, if anything
just unregister it...
Let me know how it goes, and if the above resolves your problem.

Thanks for your reply.

I am not using a proxy but performed all your steps. I also renamed my
wuweb.old back to wuweb.dll. I still get the 0x8024402C error message and WU
v5 did not update itself and it started out in v5 (no start in v4 with a
redirect to v5). If I try to have WU start in the v4.windowsupdate URL, it
immediately redirects to v5.

Can you please tell me the file version numbers of the following? They are
in the Windows\System32 directory.

wuapi.dll
wuaueng.dll
wuaueng1.dll
wuauserv.dll
wucltui.dll
wups.dll
wuweb.dll

To me, it looks like your computer doesn't find
https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com for some reason.

AU V5 seems to like :-) this error (but only because it is unable to
understand a system where an internal LAN-connection exists but internet is
only available by dial-up). So AU tries to make its updates at scheduled
times and _not_ only when the DUN-connection is established.

Thanks guys

With yours and Torgeir's comments, I've done a bit more digging.

Some more information on my configuration, I connect using the MS
Firewall Client through MS ISA server onto the internet. I've tried it
now by both enabling and disabling the firewall client, and with it
disabled then particularly specifying the ISA server in IE's proxy
settings. I've also changed the connection settings from "never dial a
connection" to "dial whenever net connect not present" just to see if
that made a difference. It didn't.

As for it perhaps not being able to visit
v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com, it loads the following page in the
address bar

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us
which loads the error frame below.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/errorinformation.aspx?error=-2145107924&ln=en-us

The only different thing about that is the https prefix, but all other
https sites work fine.

I'm tempted to shout 'bug' here, but it's a little early for that....
;)

Any other ideas? I'll keep looking as well and if I come up with
anything will post it back.

Thanks for the advice so far.

Hi Andrew,

I would like to suggest you verify your Internet Explorer LAN settings in
I.E. The following error 0x80024402c is related to your proxy
configuration. The most common problem appears to be an invalid character
in your proxy over-ride exception list, or you maybe using an incorrect
proxy URL. Below are the following directions to correct this error.

Verify there are no invalid character is the following registry key:

The expection list stores the value in this registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings

ProxyOverride REG_SZ :;<local>

Please try the following to resolve this issue.

1. Open Internet Explorer

2. Click on Tools from the top menu bar

3. Click on Internet Options from the drop down menu

4. Click on the Connection Tab

5. Click on the LAN Settings button near the bottom

6. Click on the Advanced button

7. Delete the entry in the Exceptions list.

8. Click OK until you have exited from the Internet Options dialog.

Also verify your using a valid proxy URL setting.

Select the Connection tab and press the "LAN Settings" button

. Uncheck the two check boxes with reference to automatically detect
settings and Use automatic configuration script

. Under the Proxy server section select the check box "Use a proxy
server"

. Please verify that you are using "Valid proxy setting : example
Proxy Name;" " as the proxy server and port "80", add this if blank!

. Select the Advanced button and select the check box "Use the same
proxy server for all protocols" and click on OK

. Check the box that says: "Bypass proxy server for local addresses"
and click on OK

Now this is interesting.

I haven't had time to check or change anything since my last post, and
as I came in to work this morning I thought I'd try it again. It
worked first time. I know our gateway/proxy hasn't been changed as it
would have been one of the guys in my team to change it. And my PC
hasn't been touched as I left it locked all weekend.

Microsoft? Have you been fixing things behind people's backs?

Thanks for all the help&advice chaps, I wonder if the others in this
list are now seeing the same thing?

Now, it worked after doing the same things again. I might have missed one of
the things earlier. Thanks.

OK, weird time again. I still haven't changed anything, and again it's
stopped working. I suspect the MS ISA server firewall client for this
- it's been acting up a little since SP2.

Back to the drawing board...

If you are still having trouble after you have tried
everything, then you will probably find your answer here.

After trying various KB including KB 883821, I have
discovered the cause of the infamous 0x8024402C
error for XP workstations that sit behind ISA firewalls.
You may only be seeing a 0x80072f78 error because you
haven't gotten to the update site whereby you get the
0x8024402C error. Either way, this Technical note may help
you solve your problem.

Please see the following web page (URL may wrap to two
linie but is meant to be one):
