I have a relatively fresh (4 months old) installation of Windows Vista
Business 32bit on my computer.
At first, Microsoft Update (not Windows Update, Windows Update still works
fine) worked fine. But after i deactivated it and tried to reinstall it using
the Windows Update Control Panel it started to fail with the error code
0x80070002. More precisely, it does so after accepting the license here:
http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?returnurl=http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate&ln=de&muopt=6

I already tried emptying the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution Folder (after
stopping the Windows Update Service, of course).
I also installed CheckSUR, which reported no problems. Then I installed SP1,
but the problem still persists.

The relevant lines of WindowsUpdate.log would be:

I cross-checked with my Vista Notebook and found that wsus3setup.inf did not
exist there either, but Microsoft Update worked nonetheless.

Does anyone have an idea of what is going on here? I'm somewhat clueless at
the moment.

You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an
update from
Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update
Services
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336

When searching for available updates on the Update site, you see the
0x80070002 or
0x80070003 error

I basically tried all of that (all the related KB articles) and nothing helped.
Also, there is nobody else in this newsgroup with this specific problem, as
far as I can tell:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/search?hl=en&group=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&q=0x80070002+%2B+wsus3setup.inf&qt_g=Search+this+group

I was however able to find this:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general&tid=7f834c42-1140-4409-a946-ed3394a87b5d&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&p=1
which matches my problem perfectly... but the only solution there was to
reinstall Vista.

This thread here also matches, but still no solution:
http://209.85.129.104/search?q=cache:LXvqkLC-rlIJ:forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx%3FPostID%3D2791607%26SiteID%3D17+wsus3setup+0x80070002+vista&hl=de&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=ch&client=firefox-a

Any ideas, anyone?

I just tried the WGA Diagnostic Tool (google for "wga diagnostic tool" ->
first result)

All the tabs look normal - except for "WgaER" and "Notifications":
WgaER Data-->
ThreatID(s): N/A, hr = 0x80070002
Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002

Notifications Data-->
Cached Result: N/A
File Exists: No

WgaTray.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002
WgaLogon.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002

It was a registry error... After cleaning the registry with TuneUp Utilities
2008 (3 runs) I can access the microsoft update site. It gave me one error
but after another reboot I updated office 2003 and other products...

This issue occurs when the default IE settings are modified (not extacly
known what)....

To solve this issue please try the following:

Please close all open windows and backup your favorites first.

1. Start -> System Control -> Internet Options
2. Click "Delete Cookies" and click OK when prompted to confirm.
3. Click "Delete Files", check "Delete all offline content" and then click
OK to confirm.
4. Switch to the "Security" tab, select "Internet" and click "Default Level"
if it is not grayed out.
5. Switch to the "Privacy tab", click "Default" if it is not grayed out.
6. Switch to the "Advanced" tab, click the "Restore Defaults" button and
then deselect "Enable third-party browser extensions" under "Browsing"
section.
7. Click OK to quit.

Try the Windows Update / Microsoft Update again.

with best regards,

Hi Wolfgang,

> To solve this issue please try the following:

I tried that but to no good:

I still get 80070002 in Windows update (after clicking the "get updates for
more products" button in Windows update). The error in the logfile is

So to me it seems that
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup\wsus3setup.inf is missing (and it is
not on my system as much as I can see).

What can be done about that?

Thanks and with best regards,
