Performed "system restore" to the previous day and everything worked.
Created a restore point and allowed system to update and install again,
problem repeated. Restored to new point. System works.
Recommended husband not run updates on other machine in the house. Mother
called to say that her machine had called for a reboot in the morning and now
she can't get on line either. Suspect her updates came in automatically and
created the same problem. Have trouble walking her through "system restore"
so will probably have to go there to help her.
All these machines are running XP Home.

i see that there is another post on this board with the exact same problem.
great. who knows? maybe half the world is off the internet now coz they dunno
how to rollback the software.
Well, I'm not one of MS's tech staff, but I did find this on the internet:
One of the patches interferes with Zone alarm on XP (KB951748). Uninstalling
this patch (add/remove programs) should restore your internet browsing.
John
im really glad they included the rollback thingie in MSXP, or i wouldnt know
wat to do now.
Here is a link to ZA workarounds:

I haven't been home to try it yet.

I strongly disagree with this advice:

Perhaps a better firewall is what's needed?

Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)
and after six (6) tries,,,, and time lost,, I have stopped trying,,, will
second the opinion and agree,,, someone at MS, is responsibile for field
testing,,,
I guess that team failed,,,, and still another update(hotfix) goes to the
hidden cat,,
so,,, the end,,,,, Cj00098

NB: Do NOT use Option #2 if at all possible! The vulnerability addressed by
KB951748 *is* a big deal! See

Do you have substituted drive letters defined?
(If you aren't sure, start a command line by selecting Run from the Start Menu
and entering "cmd"; in the window that appears type "subst". If there are
substituted drives they will be listed. Don't include the quote marks.)
You'll need to delete any substituted drive letters before installing the SQL
update.
Harry.
PS is your comma key broken or something?
thank you for asking,,, but,, more importantly,,,, what is wrong with the
updates,
Especially,,, the SQL one that everyone is having problems with,,,,,
maybe we all should uninstall the "SQL" software,,, most of us are NOT using
SQL Server anyway,,,, any thoughts,,,
also,,,, WHY should everyone open another incident report,,, ???
please give your thoughts,,, thank you,,,, Cj Schmitt
Because numerous SQL updates were released and a lot depends on what you
have installed and whether they were running when the update(s) were
applied.
Also because MS will NOT be offering you direct support in this newsgroup,
period.

well, Robear Dyer (PA Bear),,, now that it is another new day
07-14-2008,, 0912edt
and I have some time to reply,,, I understand, that this forum is not for
personalized help,,,, but, it seems that mostt of the comments are in
response for help,, I will in the future call the 800 help number,,,
also,, it seems to me that the "SQL" Server 2005 problem was traced to some
software that was loaded back in 04-2007,,,, and if I uninstalled it the
problem goes away,,, so,, as you can see, I use the comma key, as a pause,,
much like the TAB key,,,
also,,, I have been involved with software development since 1966,,, way
before MS DOS,, and before Windows 95,, and programming in asm, basic,
basic+, and a variety of other languages, including, PL1, fortran, and yes
COBOL, as I worked on WallSt, with IBM,,,, and a very large Bank,,,,
it just seems to me, that all the problems have a same simular origin,,
so,,
thank you, for listening,,, C j Schmitt

> and I have some time to reply,,, I understand, that this forum is not for
> personalized help,,,,
Actually it is; but the help is from volunteers, not from Microsoft. When a
problem is genuinely caused by a fault in an update and we don't already know a
way of fixing it, there isn't all that much we can do. Microsoft are going to
put more effort into investigating a problem if they get a lot of calls, but
generally speaking they won't even notice a lot of newsgroup posts.
Harry.
> In rely to Harry,,, yes,,,, I like the comma key,,, I use it as a pause,,,,
It makes your posts very difficult to read. If you're asking for help, manners
dictate that you don't impose any unnecessary burdens on the folks you're asking.
You haven't answered my question about substituted drives. This is one known
cause of the update failing, does it apply in your case?
Harry.
