[Crosspost to Windows Update newsgroup]

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting in a
forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I have WinXPsp3/IE8/AVG8.5/PC Tools/SpyBot/SpyBlaster. I have the same on my
other 2 PCs and never received this type of notice.

Someone told me:
"I called Microsoft yesterday and got the answer.
The new version of windows has a new security default setting. Go to:
Tools/Advanced:
Uncheck box = Enable memory protection to help mitigate on line attacks."

#3- Could I un-check that box, try to load program, and then re-check that
box?

#1- Would this allow me to install the "Name: Windows Update / Publisher:
Microsoft Windows Component Publisher"

#2- Does this program need to be installed?

I am just trying to learn here and appreciate your kind help.

Windows XP is not the new version of Windows. There have been 2 O/S releases
since then: Vista and Windows 7

Reposting:

1. Were any of these applications [i.e., AVG; PC Tools (whatever that is);
SpyBot Residents SDHelper and/or Tea Timer] running in the background when
you installed IE8?

2. Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this

machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

New questions:

3. Is AVG Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, and/or Security
toolbar installed?

4. Is Automatic Updates enabled?

5a. Please enable 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' (if necessary) per this
tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html

5b. In Windows Explorer, navigate to and right-click on...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WUAUCLT.EXE <=this file

Select Properties | Version (tab): Is v7.4.7600.226 displayed here?

We're getting there! I'll answer any questions you have after you post the
answers to #1 through #6 above.

I should have said ZA instead of PC Tools (Firewall on my other PC).
AFAIK = none running in backgroun.

2. Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this

I had NIS 2005 a year or so ago, but replaced with AVG 8.5.

New questions:

3. Is AVG Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, and/or Security
toolbar installed?

I'm pretty sure = NO

4. Is Automatic Updates enabled?

NO

5a. Please enable 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' (if necessary) per this
tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html

Did that.

5b. In Windows Explorer, navigate to and right-click on...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WUAUCLT.EXE <=this file
Select Properties | Version (tab): Is v7.4.7600.226 displayed here?

I looked in left pane but didn't see WUAUCLT.exe. I then put cursur over
System32 and looked in right frame and saw 2 WUAUCLT.EXE
WUAUCLT1.EXE 169KB 526/05 5.8.0.2469
and
WUAUCLT.EXE 53KB 8/6/09 7.4.7600.226

We're getting there! I'll answer any questions you have after you post the
answers to #1 through #6 above.

I didn't see a #6.

To avoid even more confusion:

=> Please do NOT attempt to post your answers inline with a quote of my post
when you reply. Just answer by number.

=> Please quote my entire post when you reply.

1. Did you intentionally & purposely disable AVG, ZA, and both Spybot
SDHelper & Tea Timer before you installed IE8? [yes/no]

2. Did you replace NIS 2005 with AVG *before* the NIS subscription had
expired? [yes/no]

3. Did you download/run the Norton Removal Tool before you installed AVG?
[yes/no]

P.S. Never had SDHelper & Tea Timer enabled.

1- As far as I can remember NO
2- As far as I can remember, I deleted NIS 2005 (before subscription just
was about to expire) and then installed AVG.
3- As far as I can remember, I uninstalled NIS 2005 from the Add/Remove and
then ran the Norton Removal Tool (before I added AVG).

(I did the same thing on my desktop and not having same problem there.)

Was this answer proper?

[Much better & thanks very much!]

1. Uninstall AVG Free v8.5 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Download/install AVG Free v9.0 (not an upgrade). This time, opt for a
CUSTOM install and do NOT install Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active
Surf-Shield, Security toolbar (especially if you're running IE7 or IE8) or
any of the email scanning components.

Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

3. Test.

Thanik you. I will try that when we have a bit more time today. My husband
wanted me to ask if you would think that there is any possibiliy of using the
method we mentioned in original post re:

"Go to: Tools/Advanced: Uncheck box = Enable memory protection to help
mitigate on line attacks."

Could I un-check that box, try to load program, see what happens and then
re-check that box?

Unchecking appears to have 'solved' the problem.
Thanks for your kind help.

YW.

FWIW, one hears that those using AVG v8.5 *must* upgrade to v9.0 by 01
December. I would STRONGLY recommend doing the "clean CUSTOM install"
method in my previous reply to accomplish this (assuming you're gonna stick
with AVG).

Unsecure computers are a threat to the entire internet. Microsoft allows
security patches to try and keep the internet safer from things like
worms and botnets.
