Hello

I have problems installing the Validation tool Windows Genuine Advantage for
Windows 2000 Professional (KB892130). The update downloaded to my computer,
started installation, and then just told me that installation failed. No
reason given.

As I understand it, this tool is for validation that my Windows 2000 is
genuine. It is, and the installation program does not tell me otherwise. It
just won't install, and doesn't tell me why. Running Windows Update again
gives the same result, except that there is no download before installation
is tried.

I have tried looking at the installation list to see if any reason is given.
But the update is not even listed. (I expected to see it listed as
unsuccessful update).

Can anybody give me a hint on how to proceed?

The Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation check process
does not complete when you try to validate your copy of Windows XP
or Windows 2000 Professional

i had the same problem. Microsoft emailed the folloiwng solution which did
work.

First, please let me know if the Windows system has been activated before
the validation. If not, I recommend we activate it first. We can contact
Microsoft Activation Center at 888-571-2048 (toll free) or 716-871-2929 to
activate Windows.

If the WGA issue occurred when the Windows system has been activated, it was
likely caused by one of the following factors:

1. A security program running background prevents the validation tool from
running properly.
2. The WGA engine was not installed or running properly.

We can take the following steps and see if the issue can be resolved.

Step 1: Disable the security programs temporarily
==========================
The following programs can prevent the validation tool from running
properly. I suggest we disable them temporarily to test the issue:

Norton Security programs
Panda Antivirus programs
Web Accelarator programs
Anti-Spyware programs

If any of the above programs cause the issue, please check if it can be
re-configured to accept the WGA ActiveX control. Otherwise, please
temporarily disabled to enable the WGA validation tool. However, please
re-enable the application after we complete the troubleshooting steps.

Step 2: Install the WGA engine manually
==========================
The WGA engine may have been already installed but is not working properly.
We can use the following steps to reinstall it. This will ensure the engine
files be copied and registered properly.

1. Download the ActiveX cab file from the following link and then save it to
the Desktop.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/c/f/acfe4666-1faf-43fd-b6fb-19191521126d/LegitCheckControl.cab

Open the downloaded cab file and we will find the following three files:

GWFSPIDGen.dll
LegitCheckControl.dll
LegitCheckControl.inf

2. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "%windir%\system32" (without
quotations) and press Enter. Copy the GWFSPIDGen.dll and
LegitCheckControl.dll files into the opened system32 folder.

3. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "REGSVR32 LegitCheckControl.dll"
(without the quotations) and press Enter. We will see a popup message state
this process succeeded.

4. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "inf" (without quotations) and press
Enter. Copy the LegitCheckControl.inf file into the opened inf folder.

5. Right click on the copied LegitCheckControl.inf file in the inf folder,
and then choose Install. The WGA engine will be installed automatically.

After we finish the above steps, please restart the computer and try to
validate the Windows again.

Thanks for the help from the replies. I got the problem solved, and I also
think I now know WHY the installation did not work originally. Which is a
good thing, because by the next update, there were six updates that
downloaded but did not install.

For security reasons, I normally log on to my system by a user account. When
I want to check for updates, I run "Windows Update" as Administrator FROM THE
USER ACCOUNT. I have to give the Administrator password, but except for the
actual update I am still running as normal user.

This has worked finde until a few weeks ago. Apparently, I now have to log
in as Administrator for the installation programs to work. Doing this made
the abovementioned six updates install without problems.

This problem may not apply to automatic update. I am not online continually,
so I don't run automatic update (I'm one of the dinosaurs who still connect
by modem).

Thanks for the help, and hope this may be a little helpful, too.

One of the methods of the new validation control, LegitCheckControl.DLL, is
one called "IsAdministrator", which returns true or false depending on
whether the current account is Adminstrator level or not. If false, then
validation checks fail.

novice - Thanks for the post. That finally got me past the WGA install
on my Win2k machine. Then I had the 0x80240020 Failure for all the
updates I tried to install (just my luck), but I got the fix for that
on another thread here. :)

It's been a good day.
