If I refuse to download and install Windows XP SP-3, will I continue to get
other critical and non-critical updates as they would normally occur? My XP
system is perfect as is without SP-3, so SP-3 can't help. But I would need
future security updates, etc. Comment? Thanks.

You may refuse for some time. Perfect? Probably not. There are already
several critical updates to SP3. In the near future the critical and
non-critical updates will require SP3.

Yes, until April 2010.

Note that free installation and compatibility support for SP3 will only be
available through April 2009.

If you've installed the SP Blocking Tool, it expires in 12 months.

Hello,

To Hide Windows XP Service Pack 3 and scan for updates again. To do this,
follow these steps:
1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then click Windows Update
on the Tools menu.
2. Click Custom , and then click Select and Install other updates .
3. In the first section, expand Windows XP Service Pack 3 .
4. Click to select the Don't show this update again check box.

Note If the Don't show this update again check box is unavailable or
dimmed, click to clear the Windows XP Service Pack 3 check box. Then, click
to select the Don't show this update again check box.
5. Click Review and Install updates to save the setting.
6. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Windows Update on the
Tools menu.

A list of the updates that are superseded by Windows XP SP3 appears.
7. Click to select the updates that you want to install, and then
click Review and Install updates .
8. Click Install Updates , and then follow the instructions on the
screen.

Are you sure WinXP SP3 *can* be hidden, Diana?

Good question. FYI, the process Diana wrote previously regarding hiding
SP-3 doesn't work -- at least on my XP Pro system with IE 7. How did she
arrive at all that!!

All I get is download and install now on the WinXP Pro SP2 IE6 box at work.
I can however ignore it and check for other updates.
This is at this stage anyway.

I've not been able to hide it via AU or WU (on my clients' machines still
running WinXP SP2 and on my machines when I was still running WinXP SP2),
hence my Q @Diana.
