One of the updates released today doesn't seem to be installing correctly.

If I go to the Windows Update site, select Express, it says I need KB917537.
I download and install it. Then if I return to the Update site, and it says
I still need it. I'm stuck in an update loop for just that one update. The
rest of them installed ok.

Anyone else having trouble with KB917537?

Bruce.

I am experiencing the same problem. I am running Windows 2003 Server
Enterprise Edition.. completely patched up with this exception (looping on
kb917537). And no anti-virus or anything running.

Is there a solution to this yet? Microsoft?

Thanks,
Steven

Yes. I am having the exact same problem. Automatic updates keeps telling me
I've got updates to instal, so I click Express, install KB917537, and get a
"update installed successfully" message. Two minutes later, I get the
automatic updates notification again, and the loop appears endless.

Does this server have a third-party product running which has locked asp.dll

Hi,
I had three of July's Updates fail on 2 of three Win 2003 Ent servers. What
I ended up doing was remove the force reboot key from the registry (Windows
Update) I also found a pendingfilerename key and deleted it, still had to
reboot and then download and install Patches KB917537, KB917159 and KB914388

I found all the patches for manual download here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Browse.aspx?DisplayLang=en&nr=20&productId=E49D77BF-D5AE-4EC6-9DFA-D7A19DBA995E&sortCriteria=date

Then ran Baseline Security Analyzer to make sure they were installed.

Had to reboot quite a few times.

Note to Microsoft: I know I am not the only one sick and tired of monthly
server reboots, take a page from Unix/Linux and build patches that don't
require reboots. Don't say you can't, cause I know you could if so inclined.

Strangely if I go to "add remove programs" KB917537 shows as having been
installed when I first tried last night, it's just WSUS keeps telling me it
still needs to be installed.

Judging from the log file the problem is with asp.dll, but that shouldn'ät be
used by anyting except IIS.

I found stopping the worldwebweb publishing services prior to installing the
updates fixed the issues. That helped with the 15 machines i update manually
I'm still looking for a solution for the 500+ webservers i was hoping to

the loop appears endlessly. The issue is with the KB917537 and severals users

Maybe it isn't the asp.dll but rather the .Net version??

The log shows that asp.dll was in use and could not be updated. You should
try shutting down IIS and/or any third-party application that uses IIS.

From your log, it appears that this 2003 Server was updated from 2000
Server. Maybe that is the factor in common amongst those reporting this
problem?

917537 is an update to asp.dll. If your XP is trying to apply 917537, you
must have an asp.dll on hard disk. asp.dll is part of IIS, which comes with
XP Pro.

I know it isn't nice to reply to my own post... but now the updates are
hidden, only the software removal tool for July is showing up.

Hopefully someone is working on it :)

Make sure that

C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll

has full-control permissions by Administrators and is not marked read-only.

Robin,

FYI, the server that failed for me was not updated from Win2k, but was a
fresh install of Web Server edition. :(

Thanks

The updates went through. I installed only the spyware removal tool,
rebooted, then the list showed all the updates (plus the spyware again go
figure). But this time it worked.. it shows all updates are being installed.

I will double check file versions and if there are any other issues I will
reply... but to me it seems like what ever was going on has been addressed
(or after enough reboots it worked).

I'm getting the same problem. The update is looping. However my log looks
different from the other one posted. Mine does not appear to indicate a
failure on the ASP.DLL. Rather it says

3: FindFirstFile c:\windows\$hf_mig$\*.*
2.233: KB917537 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not
correct.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm running Windows XP SP2. I do not
appear to have an ASP.DLL in my INETSRV folder. A more complete log below:

I have the same error in my log file.

I do not have asp.dll or IIS installed - xp pro sp2.

I do however have the Administration Tools Pack installed which has the IIS
snap-in. Wonder if that could be an issue.

Useful data point, thanks. Have you tried shutting down IIS before

No, your problem is this:

> 2.263: KB917537 installation did not complete.

It looks like your download was incomplete. You might need to:
1. Empty Temporary Internet Files in control panel Internet Options.
2. Empty the contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
3. net stop wuauserv
4. net start wuauserv
and try the update again.

Strange - that might be a problem - downloading an update for a file that
you don't have.

Right. That was the next thing to try but I also have an aversion against
rebooting a production server (or unnecessarily stopping the webserver) every
10 minutes in order to get the friggin' unistall of the failed install to
complete. Anyway, I tried stopping the WWW service and the update worked like
a charm after that. Not even requiring a reboot!

IMHO, it would have been good if the cretins at Microsoft had spent a minute
or two considering the possibility that asp.dll might be in use.

Must have something to do with the IIS snap-in.

Went to add remove programs, add remove windows components, Unchecked the
IIS snap-in and common files (all iis unchecked). Rebooted and update is no
longer needed.

Installed the IIS 6 manager from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312504/en-us, rebooted and update is still
not needed anymore.

I am having the same problem on at least two of my Windows XP Service Pack 2
machines. Neither one of them have Internet Information Services (IIS)
installed, but they have the Internet Information Services Snapin and Common
Files installed. The ASP.DLL was not on my system, either. Once I removed
the snapin and common files, the KB917537 patch quit trying to install.
Obviously, this needs to be resolved.

While it is XP Pro SP2, I'm using it as a home workstation. No server
applications, third party or otherwise.

Also, there is no asp.dll anywhere on my harddrive.

There is no asp.dll on my XP Pro SP2 system either, yet it is trying to
download 917537 anyway. I did not install IIS so it shouldn't be present on
my system.

In case it's something else tasklist (or Process Explorer) could uncover it.

E.g. in a cmd window enter:

tasklist /fi "modules eq asp.dll"

If you still need Internet Information Services Snapin and Common

create an empty file asp.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv

As others have reported, removing the IIS snap-in and common files breaks the
update loop.

Creating a dummy ASP.DLL file in the INETSRV folder did not work for me.
Instead of the update appearing to have succeeded but looping, the update
then just fails outright. It still loops.

This would seem to be a problem with the update. I would hope that Microsoft
will correct it.

I am having the same problem also.

I have a network with 40 PC's and laptops running off a WSUS server - Half
of them are having no problem at all with this patch, and half of them are.

I figured out that the PC's and laptops that are having this problem all
have the IIS MMC and Exchange administrator installed.

As of yet I have found no fix for this problem.
Anybody found a fix for this?

Thank you to Robert and Robin for their assistance.
As far as i can tell i also do not have any processes using the asp.dll (its
actually called asp51.dll for those wanting to use the tasklist command)
i also looked into the log for the update and noticed that it was erroring
on a file called halacpi.dll - though i'm not sure if this is why the update
is failing (or rather wanting to install repeatedly)

Have you seen the one about creating an empty file called

C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\asp.dll

and then letting the updater run and replace it with the new version?

So far nothing suggested here has resolved the problem. I'm still stuck in
an update loop.

I had same problem. And I realized this:

I had installed IIS (because of Exchange System Manager), but I hadnt
install World Wide Web Service (which contents asp.dll). When I installed WWW
Service, update installed same (OK), but doesnt appear again - everything is
OK now.

But this is not solution for me. I dont want WWW Service, I thing, that this
is problem of Microsoft.

Nor is it a solution for me either. I don't want or need either IIS or WWW.

FYI,

I was stuck in this same loop. I had IIS installed, but only the admin
tool, not the World Wide Web portion of it, so I didn't have asp.dll. I
installed WWW which gave me asp.dll, ran the update again, and the vicious
cycle ended.

I don't need WWW so I removed it and the update has not come back.

Hope this helps!

I am seeing the same problem on some Windows XP and Windows 2003 machines. I
have tried to uninstall and reinstall but that has not helped. The notes

We have only installed this hotfix on a limited number of machines so far.
The XP machines that have IIS installed had no problem installing the hotfix.
The only other machines that the hotfix has been installed on have
internetmanager installed on them and it looped on them. I solved the
problem by copying asp.dll from another machine to %windir%\system32\inetsrv
and it quit trying to install the hotfix.

Similar problem with KB917537 on one of our client's servers. I checked the
system log, and it actually removed the update, failed to reinstall it, and
rebooted the server. Totally hosed last night's backup jobs.

Besides the looping behavior, the reboot is very disturbing. We're sending
out updates through WSUS, and have the server set to NOT to reboot. If this
had happened during the day, all heck would have broken loose.

We are in the process of disapproving this update until it can install
properly

I had the issue on my WinXP Pro SP2 pc and I created a new blank text
document and renamed it asp.dll and saved it to %windir%\system32\inetsrv.
Within a few minutes Windows automatically recognized the file as corrupt and
extracted a new asp.dll file it appears from
%windir%\LastGood\system32\inetsrv. I had done a previous search for this
file on my hard drive that returned no results which indicates the file could
have been compressed.

After the new file was extracted I let Windows Update install KB917537 again
and the problem was resolved.

I think someone else mentioned that disabling IIS before installing the
update worked. I just tested that on a couple of servers and it does appear
to resolve the problem. Run "iisreset /stop" (or stop IIS through the
Services control panel) then reinstall the updates, then reboot.

Note - I have tested this on several Windows 2003 servers, but your results
might be different from mine. I would STRONGLY recommend testing first on a
staging server before using this procedure on a production server.

Many thanks to the Happy russian admin... just created an empty asp.dll file
where none previously existed and re-ran an the update. It failed, for the
first time. After I finished swearing, I looked in the
C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv directory and saw a new non-empty version of
asp.dll present and ran the update again. It ran successfully and the loop
is now broken.

For what it's worth, this was on a XP workstation, WWW service was not
installed, but the ISS snap-in and FTP service were installed.

I am using two notebooks, an older one with an upgraded Win XP, and a brand
new one with a new XP. Neither has asp.dll installed but the older, upgraded
one does the update loop, while the new one does not try to install the

Apparently, the update site cannot correctly determine whether the patch is
needed on older XP systems?

I have 5 XP Pro SP2 computers. Four updated fine. One developed the
KB917537 loop. I could hide the patch to stop the loop but that did not fix
it. ASP51.dll is not installed on any of the machines, except in folders for
updating.

Per another thread, I first uninstalled the patch and reinstalled it but
that did not fix it. I could reinstall the patch "successfully" per the
wizard but the loop would not go away.
Per the same thread, I next uninstalled .NET v.2 and this patch and manually
reinstall both with auto update off, no luck.

I next booted to safe mode and removed the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
folder. Turned on the auto updates to rebuild the folder and it installed the
patch successfully again but that did not cure the loop.

I next, per this thread, uninstalled the IIS services and copied the
ASP51.dll to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv, turned off auto updater, booted
to safe mode and again deleted the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder.
Rebooted. turned on autoupdater and found the patch was no longer needed --
what a waste of a couple of days of my spare time.

Thank you Micro$oft for the QUALITY of your work!

Hi Robin,
Thanks for the suggestion - None of my PC's actually have the asp.dll file.
More than likely because they don't actually have IIS installed (it's just
the management components).

Has MS acknowledged that this is a problem? If so I might just wait until
they release a fix.

I suppose I should have been paying more attention.

I created the asp.dll file on all PC's (none of them had the file to begin
with) and the patch has now installed correctly.

So - Does this mean I have effectively installed some other additional
components of IIS on each PC?

All the update does is to install an updated version of asp.dll, nothing
else.

I guess the presence of the management componenents leads to a false
detection of the presence of IIS.

And what will one of the next updates do, when finding the - never needed -
asp.dll on this computer?
I think, it's no good patch-management to install unneccessary and potential
woundable, additional software
to feed a mal programmed patch needs.

Please Microsoft, correct the IIS detection routine in KB917537 to prevent
this update loop!

After having this trouble on xp-workstations, still waiting for a better

I think the patch does not check for all conditions. I do have IIS running,
but I do not have Asp.dll installed on my machine. For my IIS configuration,
I only have the following boxes checked under IIS: Common Files, FTP
Service, and IIS Snap-In.
I'm thinking that this patch only applies to the WWW Service within IIS,
since that would/could serve .asp pages.

OK, so what you need to do is create an empty dummy file at the location

C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll

and let the updater update it. Then the update will go away for ever.

I've just had the same problem. I stopped IIS, re-ran the update, and the

with the update not stopping IIS services correctly before applying (i.e. IIS

I copied the asp.dll file from an unaffected system to
%systemroot%\system32\inetsrv and this problem went away. I believe the
..\inetsrv directory had been created previously by an install of the IIS

removal must have been incomplete.
