Windows Update Hangs - Windows Defender definitions not updating

Hi
I have Automatic Updates turned on (Windows Update) but I haven't received
any updates for about 6 weeks. Also - Windows Defender tells me my
definitions have not been upgraded for 70 days.
If I click on "Check for Updates" in Defender, or click on "Express" or
"Custom" in Update - it just hangs. I get the next screen with the moving
lights but nothing happens. Any ideas please? I am running XP
Professional.

Glenn,

Open the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory (folder).
Copy and paste the *last* section of that log that contains an error
code(s) into your reply, please. Here's an example :

Glenn,

Let's try this :

1. First stop the Automatic Update Service
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates Service.
Click Stop.

2. After Stopping the Service please rename the folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to the Windows folder
Click on the + next to the Windows folder
Navigate to the SoftwareDistribution folder
Right Click on the SoftwareDistribution folder
Select rename from the Menu
Rename the folder to SoftwareDistribution.old and click Enter

3. Now restart the Automatic Update Service
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates Service.
Click Start.

Starting the service will take a moment.

Retry Windows Update again
If the system can successfully update, then delete Software
Distribution.old
NOTE: This will remove the update history that is viewed on the WU/MU
sites.

If no joy :

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Type exit, press Enter to close the Command Prompt window.
Try Windows Update again.

As far as Windows Defender updates, if the system can successfully
update after doing the above and WD cannot, suggest you try the steps
laid out here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915105

Thanks very much.... Have tried both several times but it still hangs....
I couldn't stop the automatic update service. It times out. It say
"Stopping" but nothing happens. If I reboot then it is enabled again....

Tried the second suggestion, but again it hangs.

Glenn,

Right click My Computer either on the Desktop or on the Start Menu.
Choose Properties. Click the Automatic Updates tab.
Put a mark next to " Turn off Automatic Updates ".
Now open the Services Console.
Is Automatic Updates still listed as Started under the Status heading ?
If so, double click on it. Click the arrow next to the " Startup type "
drop down window and set it to Disabled.
Click Apply, OK.
Close the Services console.
Clear the contents of the WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download
folder first to see if that resolves the issue.

You will have to reenable Automatic Updates via My Computer first.
That *should* start the Automatic Updates service.
If not, there is definitely an issue with that service.
If so, please go here and follow the steps listed :
