LOTS of Qx re: Windows Update Catalog

PROJECT ONE: Create bootable slipstreamed XP install CD, w/all updates to
date.

I am creating an updated WinXP install CD for a repair install. My orig
disc is SP1. The installation from this disc is on my desktop system (ASUS
A7N8X-E Deluxe, AthlonXP @1.83GHz w/1GB RAM), upgraded to SP2, and recently
trashed by a failed sound chip driver install.

When it would not boot, I attempted a direct 'repair' install from orig disc
(forgetting about SP2 issues...) and was stopped dead in my tracks by the
'incorrect version' check.

So far, I've obtained all the updates in separate files. My questions are:

Qx 1. Where can I find the clearest description of how to bulk or batch
process the slipstreaming process unattended?

Qx 2. Or, is there an easier way to approach a repair install? I have
access to a 1GB thumbdrive, a 1GB MP3 player (which can also be thumbdrive),
and a digital camera w/1GB card (which can *also* work as removable drive).

Going through this procedure to fix my desktop system, I realized I am
planning to dual-boot (after a subsequent rebuild) with Win98, and I should
go ahead and work on...

PROJECT TWO: Get all Win98 updates ready for -its- bootable, slipstreamed CD.

While trying to batch download from WinCatalog, I keep getting lists of
updates "Location: Failed to download". I am not running Win98 on the
system I am using to download (don't know if that makes a difference), but I
do own a valid legal copy which I am planning to dual-boot with XP SP2+ on my
desktop system (above, Proj 1) when I rebuild it (upcoming project).

Starting at:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp?allowv4cat=true;

I click the link for "Visit the Windows Update Catalog only", then "Find
updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems", then choose "Windows 98 and
Windows 98 Second Edition" for 'Operating system:" and click the [Search]
button.

I get "Your search returned 171 results", from which I choose ALL of the
following: Critical Updates and Service Packs (78), Additional Windows
Downloads (1), Internet and Multimedia Updates (1), Recommended Updates (15),
and Windows Tools (1). I see the info "Total items in Download Basket: 96",
then I click the link for "Go to Download Basket" and see the items I've
selected "Total (including prerequisites): 96 = 303 MB".

I then scan through the list and click [Remove] for each of the non-English
selections, as it's easier to add all and remove from this screen. This
removes 16 files and brings me to "Total (including prerequisites): 80 = 182".

I then click the button [Browse...] to choose my download directory
(D:\WinUpdt\Win98.98SE), and then click button for [Download Now]. This
pulls up a small window asking me to accept the License Agreement,
referencing all 80 updates I've selected. I click the button for [Accept].

This pulls up another small window, this time referencing two updates:
811630: Critical Update (Windows 98) and 813951: Update for Internet Explorer
6 SP1. Again, I choose [Accept].

This pulls up a small window showing the download process, which rips along
WAY too fast -- faster than my internet access allows. Once complete, I wind
up back at the Windows Update web page displaying Download History, with a
LOT of "Failed to download" messages in red.

My questions here are:
Qx 3. How do I go about obtaining these files?

Qx 4. How can I get a LIST of these files (without having to transcribe
them from screen, or use PrtScrn and Paint to create capture files)?

Qx 5. Are there specific differences I need to be aware of in the process
to create a bootable slipstreamed CD for Win98? If so, where do I find
clear, detailed info?

I will gladly provide any log files, settings, tech info, reports as needed.
Thanks >so very much!< in advance! --T
