I recently sat down to update a computer purchased and installed a few months
ago. It has XP Media Center and had every update possible applied at the
time of installation. I noticed that there were over 30 updates that had not
been performed, even though the system had been set to automatically do so.

I went to Microsoft Update, and the WGA tried to run. It refused to
install. All the other updates also refused to install.

I then researched the Web and found a manual link to download the WGA tool.
I did so and it installed. However, still no other updates will install. I
have also shut off the AVG anti-virus to no effect. The only other
background tool running is Windows Defender, and the system is using the
Windows firewall. This is a very simple installation with few added programs.

I have also run the WG2Diag tool per some of the other comments here which
did not help, although it validated the install.

Almost every machine I regularly use now has a problem in Windows Update,
most around the .Net update disaster listed all over the Web.

Windows Update at the moment appears to be a disaster like nothing I have
ever seen prior. Offering WGA installs which then break to machines that
have repeatedly ALREADY been validated is a joke.

Assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

The error message is that 31 updates have been downloaded and are ready to
install, and then they all immediately fail to install.

I get a panel saying "the follwoing updates were not installed:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB947864)

There is no error code, and frustratingly no reason for the failure given.
