Running: Windows XP Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
I click the Update icon on my taskbar and the download appears to start but
then I get a message saying they failed to install. No error number.
I tried to get them from the Update website but that page just seems to hang
up. Or maybe I am too impatient, but I wait 5 minutes and it is still
searching.

When trying to run windowsupdate.log I get a message saying
"Windows cannot open this file" , then directing me to a site to look up a
program to open it.
There it says
"Windows has the following information about this file type. This page will

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.
2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

So the issue is fixed- thanks for your time in try to help me resolve this.
Just an FYI for Mow--- the log message about the scheduled to install the
next day showed up for every day that I tried to install it.

Then run this MS Fixit: How do I reset Windows Update components?

Run the Fixit in it's Aggressive mode and then restart the system.
It will do all of the steps in the " Let me fix it myself " section.
The system must be connected to the internet so that all steps can be done.
You should be good to go after that.
