Win XP SP3 + WinMediaPlayer 10

I have looked through the below and I cannot see anything that would
indicate that this update applies to my system.
I have looked/searched for Media Format Runtime on my system but have drawn
a blank.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS09-047.mspx

I have also checked through all that is on offer at -

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/results.aspx?freetext=968816&displaylang=en&stype=s_basic

and can find nothing that appears to be applicable.
Would a Media Player group, in which to post, be appropriate.
I would appreciate some advice.

Thank you

Is KB968816 being offered by Windows Update?

It most certainly does apply to your system. Even though you've upgraded to
WMP 10, you cannot remove WMP 9.x which, by default, includes the vulnerable
Runtime.

But you don't have to take my word for it. Ask MS CSS about it: See the
"How to obtain help" section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968816

Hello PA BEAR

Many thanks for your reply - of course I will take your word for it :-)
I know better than argue with you.
It might have helped if I knew what 'Media Format Runtime was'????
The update is offered via the yellow shield and Win Update Home 'Custom'
search.
I could DL from there, but I like to get it from here as a rule

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/results.aspx?freetext=968816&displaylang=en&stype=s_basic

- burn to disc - run with no net connection and all security disabled.
Could you please confirm, on the above link, that the one for me is No1 in
the list?

I couldn't care less if you don't install it.

If you're running WinXP SP3 with WMP10 installed, the correct download for
manual install would be this one:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=31585f5a-9aaa-40da-b15a-11284b4b800c

PS: If Automatic Updates is offering to install the update (not download
it), the correct installer's already been downloaded so why bother
downloading the full 4.2MB installer to install it manually?

Hello PA
I hope somebody before me pizzed you off, hence jumping down my throat.
You must have missed my bit of tongue-in-cheek. I will try not to do it
again.
Anyhow, thank you for the confirmation.
Due to failures to install properly in the past, I do not do it from the
yellow shield offer, nor via Win Home Updates.
I prefer to get all updates from the direct from DL Centre.
I thought I had clearly explained how I prefer to do these updates.
Due to my ignorance of MFR I found it confusing to find which one to pick.
I will now go get the right one and install.

Do you mean that you have Automatic Updates set to the Notify Only setting
and AU wants you to approve the download? If so, you didn't say that.

Yes and Yes. No I didn't think I needed to as I mentioned the yellow
shield - mea culpa, mea culpa.
But thanks for the confirmation - DL and install completed - no problems.

The yellow AU shield can mean many things, depending on your AU settings,
including:

1. Updates are available for download approval;

2. Updates are available for installation approval;

3. Updates have installed & a reboot is required;

4. XX minutes have passed and you haven't reboot yet; and the always
pleasant...

5. YOU F***ING IDIOT, YOU STILL HAVEN'T REBOOTED! IF YOU DON'T DO IT SOON,
WE'RE GONNA DO IT FOR YOU AND THEN YOU'LL BE SORRY!!!

Well I certainly recognise No5 from a few years ago :-)

And there appears to be another option - 1 & 2 come together :-)[my
setting]

And an odd one that I have had just a couple of times -

Haha - we got you sleeping that time - you didn't spot the little note to
say we will DL and install when you Turn Off.

Hell, I've even got a <canned response> for it but you don't see the "yellow
icon" when that happens:

<canned>
With the Notify Only option (and sometimes with any of the others) enabled,
you'll only see AU's yellow "Updates are ready to be installed" icon when
/all/ of the "approved" updates have downloaded.

If some but not all of the approved updates have downloaded, you may
encounter a "Click to install important updates and then shut down" button
when you go to turn off your computer. Using it will install the
already-downloaded updates...but (and it's a big "but") there's no way of
knowing which updates they are (at least not without doing a little digging
in windowsupdate.log).

Absent any serious numerical Errors in your windowsupdate.log (cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093), you may be seeing a delay (i.e., in
downloading all approved updates) caused by excessive demand on the servers
("Update is not allowed to download due to regulation"). See...

Updates are not downloaded or the Automatic Updates icon does not display
the status of downloads when you enable the Automatic Updates service

http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2009/06/25/seems-like-muchado-about-nothing-to-try-to-get-people-to-turn-off-updating.aspx

In most cases, you can install all of the updates manually via
Windows/Microsoft Update website (WinXP) or by running Windows Update
manually (Vista) instead: Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all
other Automatic Updates users further back in the queue...which may explain,
at least in part, why Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet.

Hi PA BEAR

I am afraid that quoting MS-speak more often than not complicates my
understanding of procedures.
I did try to keep this simple.
My update setting is 'to download and install updates only after checking
with you'.
MS checks with me via the yellow shield notification. I make a note of what
is on offer - read and try to comprehend the MS-speak and download in my
much used manner.
I may or may not DLL/install all that is on offer in the first instance.
If I don't, the yellow shield remains until I do - as it should.
Then I have to take care when I turn off the computer, and note if there is
a little tiny shield asking me if I want to DLL/install when I turn off.
This has only happened a couple of times-once it caught me out. Now, if
this second notification at the point of 'turn off' only occurs when I have
DLL/installed some of those updates on offer, I could not say. But it
appears that this should happen.
As to all the different variations of what can/could/did/should/might happen
as explained in the 'canned' MS-speak you have drawn to my attention, I am
unable to comment.
I can only conclude that what I have experienced conforms to what MS says
happens.
Well, 'regulated' does not show up in the logs, so I have not got that bug
;-)
Interesting blog - in it is an explanation for the delay in getting the
update notification - and I am aware that the updates are rolled out by area
or something, to prevent MS from suffering over demand.

Please, please - if I still have not grasped this
matter......................

If AU is set to Notify Only (yours is) and you never Approve an update for
download, you'll never see a "Regulation" error in WindowsUpdate.log.

YW.

PS: If you never pick up your telephone, you won't hear a dial-tone either.
