yellow shield still there

I use Automatic Updates to inform me when Microsoft updates are available,
but I download and install them from the Windows Update website. On my new
notebook computer running WinXP Pro SP3 I downloaded and installed Tuesday's
updates today. All seven of them downloaded and, according to Windows
Update, were successfully installed.

However, after three reboots, I still have the yellow shield in the system
tray. When I click on it, I'm informed that the Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB956390) should be downloaded. I
checked at Windows Update, and it doesn't show any Priority updates for my
computer. I looked at the Windows Update log, and the last entry for
KB956390 shows that it was successfully installed.

So what do I do about the yellow shield?

Is this the machine running NIS?

Is "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer (KB956390)" listed in
Add/Remove Programs?

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue
(which is 47830).

No, this computer is running Avira AntiVir and the Windows Firewall, not
NIS.

No, [Cumulative] Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer (KB956390) is
not listed in Add/Remove Programs; all I see there is Windows Internet
Explorer 7 itself. Should the security upgrade be listed separately there?
(Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool October 2008 [KB890830] isn't
there either, although it has apparently been installed.)

Should I go ahead and allow the installation through Automatic Updates to
see what happens? Or would I create a problem by doing that?

If nothing else works, I will start a support incident request.

By the way, I haven't yet downloaded the Tuesday updates on my NIS-protected
computer. I suppose I should do that to see if I get the same issue...

I mis-spoke about the cumulative security update for IE7. I didn't see the
box that one has to check to view updates in Add/Remove Programs til a few
minutes ago. And the answer is now yes, KB956390 is listed in Add/Remove
Programs. Also, I turned on the computer after midnight, so I could check on
whether the shield would disappear the day after the installation (hoping
anyway)--but it's still there.

Today, 10/16, as of 10:00 a.m., the yellow shield has disappeared. I'll go
ahead and install the updates on my other computer.

Thank you for that, Robear. I'm trying to get to a point where I hold off
the 12 hours before posting about something that's wrong but that isn't
life-threatening to my computer. I did manage to do something for myself
today after starting a post: I figured out how to join a Microsoft private
newsgroup through OE, although Microsoft's instructions didn't go far
enough.
