Windows Vista doesn´t update because some files are missing

My Windows Vista is 64-bit. I believe Anti-Virus program deleted some
important files from Windows Update (and I don´t know what they are).
I´ve tryed run Windows Update and "80070424 Code" always appears. The
solutions posted by Discussion Group didn´t make any effect.
I think I need reinstall Windows Update (removing the previous one) or
repair it. But those options are impossible to do, aren´t they?
I´m afraid I´ll format the PC just because Windows Update fails.

What solutions have you tried? Are you running Vista SP1 now? What
anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

I´ve tried the solutions:
1. "An update to prevent a Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
crash on a Windows Vista-based computer". When I try to install the flies for
64-bit versions, I have the message "Update doesn´t aply to your system".
2. Start > Run > Regsvr32 QMGR.DLL. When It was runned, I got the message:
"QMGR.DLL module was loaded, but the DLLRegisterServer point wasn´t found".
3. Running "sfc" (sfc /scannow) from an elevated command prompt, It refuses to
start. The message is: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the
requested operation."

Some specifications:
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit with SP1 (I have downloaded all avaiable
updates until 06.10.2008).
Avast Antivurus 4.8 Home.
I have only windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

[Judging from other posts similar to yours in this newsgroup, you may end up
finding that the machine is infected with Vundo, ZLOB and an SDBot-variant,
all protected by a rootkit. Chances are that Avast isn't working properly
either.]

Did you install Vista SP1 via Windows Update or manually?

Was Avast running in the background when you installed Vista SP1?

Thanks, PA Bear. A lot.
I installed Vista SP1 via Windows Update. Avast was running in the
background when I installed Vista SP1. After many days, I suppose I confirm
exclusion of a file from Windows Update folder by Avast Antivirus.
