Is it possible to buy a cd with the latest service pack and updates
on it? My friend cannot get high speed internet where she lives and
we are having a really hard time getting the updates on her really
slow dial-up connection. She has Windows XP Home sp2 and is having
some other problems also...I think she may have some kind of
malware. Her anti-virus (Norton) has expired and she can't seem to
download updates for AVG.
Thanks for any suggestions.

The best way of getting the updates is have a friend who has the fast
connection to download and save them for you.

To find out if SP3 is available on CD for your area, contact MS directly.
For telephone details check:
https://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

Security updates are available on ISO-9660 CD image files from the Microsoft
Download Center
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086

You can also download individual updates from the Catalog and save to be
installed later.
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what
you want, Click the “Go To Download Basket” link. Type in or browse to the
location where you want the updates saved to and then Click the “Download
Now” button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog or from
the Microsoft Update Catalog

As for your anti virus, I don't know about AVG.

If someone wants to make it for you and sell it to you... sure.

Yeah - I know many people in this situation. It does make it difficult to
stay updated (in many ways) with dial-up...

Then she probably needs to clean it up before updating. Updating a sick
system will not cure the sickness and may just exasperate it to the point of
data-death.

Was Norton uninstalled fully before AVG was installed and what version of
AVG?

Anyway... Assuming you have high-speed - why don't you make a packet of
goodies for her and get them to her?

I'd suggest:

- Windows XP SP3 CD...
- May 2008 Updates CD...
- June 2008 Updates CD...
- A CD containing:
- AVG AntiVirus 8 with a script to install it without link scanner/email
scanner.
- SuperAntiSpyware
- SpyBot Search and Destroy
- CCleaner
- Belarc Advisor
- PDFCreator (0.95)

I also suggest you give her advice on how to backup her email (depends on
client used - include contacts), advice on how to backup her Internet
favorites/bookmarks (depends on browser used), advice on how to backup her
"My Documents" and "Desktop" as well as any other folders she has made on
her own (buy external USB drive - copy/paste would be better than nothing.)

She should backup before doing *anything else*. Also - one last thing - you
may want to help her go through the list of known problems and proper
preparations for SP3 before installing it... I'll list those last.

She can help you get the information you need to help her with the rest
using the last two items I listed above on the last CD. If she installs the
PDF creeator and then installs the Belarc advisor and runs it to get a
report - she can print that report to PDF using the the recently installed
pdf printer and email you the file it creates so you know what is listed in
add/remove programs and what updates she has installed/is missing.

Now - as for getting those things - I would suggest Google. I have a few
extra minutes - so I will help you out a bit to save you time...

Have a physical CD burning but need a way to burn the ISO images?
ISORecorder page (with general instructions on use):
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

Each month Microsoft puts out that months
patches in an ISO format for burning to CD:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086
(Back to 2006)

There's at least one third party tool that
will download all the patches for you:

Service Pack 3 for Windows XP (ISO of CD):

AVG AntiVirus:
http://free.grisoft.com/

Uninstall the old version... Make sure everything "Norton" is gone... Reboot
and install the latest version using the command line:
avg_free_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE
fea_AVG_SafeSearch

Custom install, remove the email scanner as well.

Need something to help ensure all norton stuff is gone

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

From PA Bear [MS MVP]:
Workarounds:

[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

Some people have gotten an "Access Denied" message when trying to install

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the
latest hardware drivers from your hardware vendors...

Good Luck!

MedRxman,

You seem to be posting from 12 hours in the past.
You may want to check your system time and/or your time zone setting, if
applicable.

Wow! That's a lot of information. It may take us a while but we'll
get started. I found out her version of AVG is too old to get
updates for so I have the newest version on a flash drive along with
Ad-Aware and Spyware Blaster which I use on my own computer. We will
work on cleaning her computer and then worry about getting the
updates after that. Thanks for your time and all the information.
I am saving this message for her and for my future use also,
although my computer is doing great right now.
Thanks to all the others who answered also.
Janice

order the CD while they are available. Or have a friend download it for you.
