Do Method 1.
There's a later Version of the Windows Update Agent [WUA] that just
started rolling out and it's *supposed* to resolve that wups2.dll issue.
Time will tell.

get it installed:

If you're not sure if XP is 32 or 64 bits, then run
msinfo32
from Start > Run and click OK
Check the System Type.
EX: x86 = 32 bit
x64 = 64 bit
