The original cd was 4 1/2 yrs old so I know that many critical updates are
needed. However, everytime I check windows update, it reports that no
critical updates are available for my computer.
Does anyone know what the problem must be???

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.
The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version" will
give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response to this message
verbatim. No paraphrasing - instead - ensure character-for-character
copying.
;-)
If SP1 or later - download and install SP3 manually.
If no service pack is listed, download SP2 and install manually, reboot and
do the same for SP3.
Either way - then check for more updates.

This computer is 4+ yrs old. I was having many problems, which looked to be
software, so I decided to reinstall Windows XP. I did this from my disc, and
also from a SP3 disc.
Before this, the software would down load updates as it often did.
After reloading, I now keep getting the message that none are available
after it downloaded one update, KB958644 on 11/22/2009
From past experience, it seems that there should have been many more updates
to download that were issued after SP3.
I am hesitant to reload XP after having just done so.

Could you verify the "version" line please. That seems wrong - at least
incomplete.

That's because SP3 RTM (Release to Manufacturing or Market) is not
installed, rather, it was a Release Candidate (final Beta release
v.3264). The Version info shows SP3 RC as installed in 2007.
XP SP3 RTM came out in April 2008. winver here now shows this fully
updated XP SP3 as:
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804- 1435: Service Pack 3)
Notice there is *no* version showing after 'Service Pack 3' in the
Version info but there is in the Version info you posted.
Be happy that KB958644 installed or the system would have been
compromised by a Conficker variant, aka W32.Downadup

From some of the other comments to this post, I seem to get the feeling that
something is missing. What is the problem??

If so do I have to uninstall the present one, or just load over it??
