My HP Pavilion notebook PC was shipped with Media Center 2002. I am trying to
use it with Netflix's "play" option for viewing movies, but was told by
Netflix that it is only supported by v. 2005 or better. I contacted
Microsoft, but they refered me to HP. I was told by HP that Microsoft no
longer provides this upgrade. Does anyone know of a way around this?

At this point - I would say you could look for an OEM copy of it at
different online resellers (Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005) so you can
purchase it and install it on your machine.

HP used to offer an upgrade program... (see
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270142&dlc=en
for proof) but they obviously do not this many years passed the realistic
'worth it' point. ;-)

Essentially - what it boils down to is this...

You are not likely to be able to *upgrade* to Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2005. You may be able to purchase an OEM copy still floating around
on the Internet and would then be safer installing a clean copy of it on
your machine (being OEM - it will likely not allow an *upgrade* installation
anyway.) This will require careful backups and such on your part and you
must have all the prior software ready to install (or lose it.)

Your support for Windows XP Media Center Edition (being an OEM product) is
HP (since that is the OEM you chose to buy your Media Center PC from) and if
HP is telling you "sorry" (no matter what lies they attach to it about
anyone else) then HP is your source for support and they have all but
deserted you.

You might be able to find a copy here:

NewEgg is trustworthy...

(Cannot speak for some of the rest listed there... heh)

Thought this might help--I have a Sony Vaio with Xp 2002 and have spent
3 days and $40 to a tech (who did lead me to the resource pages) and
then found this at another tech site. I downloaded to the Desktop so I
could find it.
It Worked!! Good Luck!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had the same problem and I finally worked around this problem as
follows:
1) download Media Player 11 exe (wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe) to a
folder
2) Install 7-Zip from http://www.7-zip.org/
3) Run 7-Zip and have it extract the files from
wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe into another folder (eg:
c:\download\wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu)
4) Run C:\download\wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu\wmfdist11.exe
5) Run C:\download\wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu\wmp11.exe

You should now have Media Player 11 and you can watch your Netflix
movies.
