I have Windows XP. My computer keeps telling me that I have updates to
install. When I go through the steps, it states that "they are being
installed". Afterward, it states that they could not be installed. It lists
4 of them: KB951748; KB942763; KB951978; and KB890830. When I review my
installation history, it states that the last one (KB890830) was installed
sucessfully on 5-7-08, so I wonder why it keeps telling me to install it.
Also, on 5-7-08, an attempt to install Internet Explorer 7 failed (code
is 0X13). Could this be the reason that I am unable to install the above
updates and that no other updates have installed since 7-5-08?
I'm concerned that I have missed critical updates in the last 2 months. Do
I need to try to install IE7? My workplace (elem. school) told us not to
install it on our classroom computers, as it had some issues.
Thanks for your help! Sorry so lengthy, but I needed to clarify all the
issues.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

You are fantastic! Thank you so much! The updates are all installed and up
to date. I did not install IE7, though; should I do so?

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

You're welcome and thanks for your feedback.

If WinXP SP3 isn't installed yet, I'd wait until it is before installing
IE7. See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx.

===================================
Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.
