Windows updates already installed?

I have got a notification for updating to Windows SP SP3 but I chosed to hide
it and didn't install the update. Then I received a notification for two
Windows XP updates and that time I chosed to download them and I could notice
that it started downloading. But several minutes later I clicked the yellow
notifcation icon at the system tray, it showed that another update Windows
installer 3.1 was found instead of a message that the first two updates were
ready to install. Then I downloaded Windows installer 3.1 and got it
installed successfully and restarted my computer to make it effective. Then I
got a notification too which has a long listing of Windows XP updates.
However, except those updates which were issued in September 2008, quite a
lot of them could be found in a folder called $hf_mig$ under the Windows
folder.

Currently my computer is running Windows XP Profressiona SP2 and IE7.

Should I just install the updates issued for September and igore those
already existed in the $hf_mig$ folder, or install all the updates notified
to me. Before I have done a repair installation (upgrade installation) and
afterward have installed those Windows updates for August and other updates
through notification.

Please advise.

What problems were you having that you thought a Repair Install would fix?
If you had a hijackware infection, the machine's probably still infected!

You should install ANY critical security updates offered by Automatic
Updates or Windows Update website!

If you're currently running WinXP SP2, you'd probably be able to avoid
installing close to 100 of them if you installed WinXP SP3 first.

I did a repair installation due to some system files were found missing and
could not enter the window.
my question is that under the windows folder, there are folders which have
the same name ID (such as KBxxxxxx) as those updates notifying me to install.
I am not sure these updates had been installed (before the repair
installation?) and if so they should be installed again or not?

Sounds like a hijackware or virus infection to me. A Repair Install is NOT
going to fix this. Having done a Repair Install is why you're finding those
update-related folders present even though Windows Update is telling you to
install them. I'd recommend a format & clean install, Simon.
