I have used Windows Update on W Vista for a long time without problems, but
now suddenly it stopped working. When I try to start it, it says "Error code
80070005". I get the impression that one of the updates caused this ...
Any idea about how to cure it?

Install/reinstall Windows Update Client

x86-based versions of Windows - download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
package now.

x64-based versions of Windows - download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe
package now.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91238

Please see if installing the 3.0 client resolves the problem.

If you require more information:

A new version of the Windows Update Agent is available

Another thing you can try is resetting the security settings back to the
defaults:

Thank you for fast and informative answer!
I believe I pressed the wrong button when I replied, so here it comes again
...

a) When I try to download and reinstall the Windows Update I get the
following message (translated from Swedish):
"An irreversible error occurred during installation of the Windows Update
agent".
The it stops.

b) I cannot fetch a new version of Windows Update, since that requires
Windows Update.
Is there a way around this?

c) Your third suggestion I hesitate to try - the tone in the article scares
me a bit. I am not aware of any special settings. What consequences can this
have, provided I make everything right?

/ Erik

The installed antivirus/security software/3rd party firewall is
preventing the Windows Update Agent from installing. Suggest you
download the agent first, disconnect the system from the net/network,
*temporarily and completely DISABLE all security software*, then install
the WUA from an *elevated* command prompt [ for Vista ] after stopping
the Windows Update service:

Reboot, * reenable ALL security software *, then reconnect the system.

I receive the same error 80070005 when installing an update for HP - Display
- HP w1907 Wide LCD Monitor. I receive the folowing message:

Installation date: ‎1/‎23/‎2010 10:35 AM Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070005
Update type: Recommended
HP Display software update released in August, 2009

I am using Vista Ultimate. This is the only updates that fails.

Update for hardware?

Get it from those who actually manufacture and support said hardware - in
your case - HP. Microsoft did not make the hardware you are referring to -
do not go to them or accept their offer of support for it. Go to those who
have a vested interest.
