the long awaited roll out date of xp sp3 was yesterday, yet although
about 5 updates came out, none was sp3?

I need to know the release date.

It was released over a month ago. Apparently your computer isn't ready
for SP3 so you weren't offered it.

your not really reading or understand my post.
yes, XP SP3 was available for download via microsoft/windows update a
month ago.

But it was not scheduled to be download automatically via automatic
updates onto PC until yesterday.

There are two completely different dates.

I was offered SP3 weeks ago via Auto Update.

Your computer is not ready.

What makes you think my comptuer is not ready?
Ive done all possible updates, even the ones that came out yesterday.

I have about 15 computers and none of them are getting sp3 offered via
automatic updates.

I dont beleive anyone was supposed to get sp3 until yesterday unless
it was initiated wtih microsoft updates or download from microsoft.com
or a private wsus server, im scratching my head on what is going on
here. Does anyone else have any input?

I need it to know specifically when sp3 will be download as Ive made a
comptuer program which will fix some registry problems on an image and
allow it to install.

The image being an Intel image loaded onto a computer with an AMD
processor, specifically an HP or Compaq computer? If so, that's why it
wasn't offered. You need to download the .ISO, burn it to a CD and use that.

I have not been offered SP3 by auto update yet either. If I go to
Microsoft update I am offered it. I have XP on about 5 computers here
all different hardware and none have been offered it by auto update,
just by Microsoft Update.

It's hard to say, since MS rolls it out in stages for automatic update.

What do you mean by "roll out in stages"?
Why dont atleast some of my comptuers been offered it then.
I believe automatic updates come out every few weeks on mondays or so
to everyone.

The script Im deploying is to about 3000+ computers.
It needs to be semi synchronized with the roll out of sp3

Service packs are not rolled out at once to all machines. They are rolled
out in stages: Different times, different days, different weeks...I don't
know their criteria...perhaps geographically.

MS never said the roll-out would start on 10 Jun-08.

I wouldn't expect it to begin in earnest for at least another 7 to 10 days
myself, seeing as so many updates were released on Patch Tuesday.

YMMV.

I think you're out of luck. You'll need to either script the SP3 install, or
deploy WSUS (you seriously have 3000+ computers all going directly to Microsoft
to download their updates?) or modify your script to detect whether SP3 has been
installed yet.

why, you dying to screw up a fine running system for no good reason? btw,
I have seen it show up on my automatic updates - which I have set to NOT.

No clue - for the fully-automatic updates people or WSUS.

For others (Notify and those who manually go to the Windows Update web
site) - it has been offered for a while.

I hope you have spent the time going over these web pages for whatever
machines you are anxious to install Windows XP SP3 onto...

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

FRom what I've read somewhere, MS will stagger the availability of SP3 so it
won't bog down their servers [you can of course download it manually - 310MB].

It could also be because of the service pack blocker or maybe the system
lacks a prerequisite or maybe it detected the system will have an issue if
SP3 is installed.

thanks Everyone.
Like I said, I really just needed to know hte date it would be
availble.
After doing some back tracking, it appears someone who claimed they
worked at msft.

I wasnt really looking for help with the script, Its throughly tested
and works fine.
It basically fixes permissions problems in with the registry so that
sp3 can back it up, otherwise the sp3 install fails.
By scripting in a reboot and then scanning for updates (which i now
know when sp3 will be found) after its done, it all done in one
fluent process.
Its not a "windows repair", nor am i hitting msft for large downloads.

thansk everyone.

many thanks

funny how people ketp telling me it was being offered to them via
automatic updates
its finally starting roll out tomorrow
Im pretty sure people got it early is that they went to msft updates
manually though.,

=======

A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed that July 10 is, in fact, XP SP3's
automatic update debut, but cautioned that not all users would see it
immediately. "As with all service pack releases, Microsoft will
carefully monitor the release to ensure that all customers have a good
experience," she said in an instant message reply to queries. "Once
Windows XP SP3 is posted to AU [Automatic Updates], some users may see
it right away; others may not see it for awhile."

For a very brief period in early May-08, SP3 was being offered to WinXP SP2
users who had Automatic Updates configured to "Download but notifiy" or
"Notify only".
