Final info : Great.
Now please translate or explain the post. You appear to have left out
HOW it was FINALLY installed.

i too am having trouble installing the latest Intel Corporation driver update
for Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family from Windows
Update. it seems that the latest driver is showing an earlier version number
than the version I already have installed. I've tried to uninstall the
current driver so the new one can install, but when I reboot to fully remove
the old driver, as soon as it comes back up it automatically installs the old
driver from my hard drive before I can get the new one to install.
It looks like I need to do one of 3 things:
1. delete the old driver from my hard drive, so that there is no choice but
to download the new driver.
2. tell Vista to NOT automatically install the video driver, so that I can
have a chance to down load the driver from Windows Update.
3. download the new driver to my hard drive replacing the old driver, so
that Vista will have to install the new driver. But, I don't know where to
download the driver from. My laptop is a Sony VAIO, and apparently Sony has
abandoned my model as far as support goes.

Hi,

Try this.
When the update fails, don't close your WU window.
Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and check if you have a
install or installed folder there. If you do, you should see som igfx or igx
files there. If you do, this is your newly downloaded driver that failed to
install.
Then navigate to Device Manager and find your display adapter.
Right click and choose update driver...
Then click Browse my comuter...
Then Let me pick from a list of....
Then click Have disk.. and navigate to the folder mentioned above.
You should see one file in this folder (igfx or something like that) and
then as you click OK, the driver should be visible to choose.
Install it. The installation may take some time, and you need to reboot your
computer.

Regards,
Martin

Thanks Martin. That worked. It was the "Let me pick from a list of...."
option that successfully forced the driver upgrade.
As a final step, I had to manually "Check for Updates" to force Windows
Update to detect the new driver version and remove the update from the list.

I found everything you speak of except the final step of the igx folder to
update. I have a lot of the igx and igfx files in there, but when I go to
update, they are not showing up.

Any advice?

Have managed to get this update to work with the Intel Mobile
915GM/GMS/910GML driver from Windows Update through this method!

Thanks for the post!

Hi there,

Taking drivers from Windows update is not a good idea unless you like
problems, if a driver is needeed because the hardware is not working well
than get it at the manufacturers website.

If the hardware works well than leave it be working well.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

You installed an o/s that is not supported by the hardware on your system,
and as its a budget notebook you cannot upgrade the hardware.

Reinstall your origonal o/s using the Dell recovery cd's and put Vista back
in the box. I sincerely hope it wasnt an OEM version, as if it was you now
have a new coaster

Yes, Dell will be happy to sell you a computer that will
handle Vista and make movies.

Do NOT update drivers from winupdate, if you *need* drivers get them from
the manufacturers sites. In your case HP

I have the same printer - love it - but it's not compatible with Vista and HP
has discontinued the model and isn't updating drivers for Vista
compatibility. I am able to scan with it using Windows Photo Gallery instead
of HP Director. Search Windows Help & Support for "scan a picture" for
directions. Works great.

The driver you are trying to install is already installed or the driver that
you're trying to install is an older driver than the one you have already.
All drivers should be obtained from the manufacturer's site rather than from
Windows Update.

Hi,
I've been going to windows update for years for drivers with no problems.
Sometimes you have to use windows update because the manufacture will no
longer support certains models and make the driver unavailable thus forcing
you to go to windows update or spending unneccisaryly for something new to
replace something that works just fine.

Hi,
Thats not neccesaraly true. I had the same model and few others and had no
truble upgrading hardware and software. You just need to make sure you dont
already have the maximum hardware and software supported already installed.
And Vista isnt hardware is software.

Why are you posting to a thread from *** 2007 *** ?
Oh ... this explains it. You're using a web browser instead of a
newsgroup reader:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

Windows Update often "unneccisaryly" offers drivers to systems that have
absolutely no issue with the hardware that it's offering the drivers
for. If it ain't broke, why fix it ?

For older systems, yes, obtaining the drivers from WU may be the only
means to obtain them. I've found most manufacturer's do offer archived
drivers for older hardware. YMMV.
