I'm being prompted by the Windows Update software to install the following 6
"Important" updates to the Windows Office 2007 suite. Every time, I click
the install button, it goes through the motions and comes up with the message
that the install failed with error code 646 and points me to a useless help
page to fix the problem. Has anyone else come across this problem? I am
running McAfee security suite provided by AT&T Uverse.
Here are the updates that fail to install properly.
KB973709
KB972581
KB974810
KB973636
KB974234
KB972363
Replace McAfee with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender.
Disabling McAfee is not enough. You need to completely uninstall it.

It's a known issue with windows installer 4.5 and vista, according to the
microsoft tech I spoke with today. I had quite a few computers with this
problem in my environment. As soon as I installed the hotfix, everything
installed. You can request the fix for Vista and you can also request if for
XP.
Cheers,
