Help need to find out how to fix this error 0x8ddd0004, unable to update
windows

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x8ddd0004 error

1. Make sure you are logged in as an Administrator (if you are not the Administrator, then log in as
an Administrator and try Windows Update again).

2. Make sure your firewall is not blocking the Update site and check any pop up stopper programs.

3. Now check in IE tools\manage add-ons (Win XP SP2 only) making sure that WuWebControlClass is
enabled. (Select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" in the "Show:" drop down list)

4. You may also wish to check c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files to see if anything is corrupted
there.

5. Make sure you accepted the Microsoft Trust Certificate

6. Check security settings, make sure they are not set too high

7. Delete cookies and temp files

8. Re-register these files, by clicking Start, Run and typing:-

REGSVR32 wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 atl.dll
REGSVR32 wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 wups.dll

You should receive a successful message after each one.
Try Windows Update Again.

If that hasn’t helped you may need to re-register some more files:-

net stop cryptsvc
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
net start cryptsvc

You should receive a successful message after each one.

If necessary:-

Re-install Windows Update files

Note If you have an x64-based computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent20-x64.exe

Click Save in the File Download-Security Warning dialog box, and then select the location where you
want to save the file.
Double-click the file that you saved

Note "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already installed.", run the exe with the
command line switch /wuforce, like this:
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce

marks) and press Enter. Choose Yes when you are prompted.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
window.

3. After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window.
Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.
4. Click Start and Click Run, type in "C:\fix.reg" (without quotation marks)
and press Enter to run the commands we have pasted.
5. A dialog box will pop-up saying "Are you sure you want to add the
information in C:\fix.reg to the registry?". Click Yes on this dialog box
6. Reboot the machine.
7. After the machine reboots use Windows Update and see if the problem has
gone away.

After trying many different things to get rid of this annoying problem it
came down to re-installing the Windows Update files..

I have Windows 2003 Ent x64 SP1. I have the same problem and tried all the
mention in this post and still doesn't work. I also tried reinstalling the
windows update agent and:

Regsvr32 /S Jscript.dll
Regsvr32 /S Msxml3.dll
Regsvr32 /S Atl.dll
Regsvr32 /S Wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 /S Wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 /S Wuaueng1.dll
Regsvr32 /S Wucltui.dll

Regsvr32 /S Wuweb.dll
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

del C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log

I also noticed this from the windowsupdate.log

WARNING: Failed to populate ServiceStartup entries in Cache: error 0x80070002

Any suggestion?

delete or rename %systemroot%\SysWOW64\SoftwareDistribution

there are 2 WU locations to consider with x64 Windows 2003

I had a similar problem that turned out to be a missing add-on that is
nowhere to be found when you try to search for a download. To check and make
sure that you actually have all of the system32 files that you're supposed to
go to my computer>local disk C:>Windows (unhide the files if need
be)>system32> then search for:
Atl.dll
Jscript.dll
Msxml3.dll
muweb.dll
Wuapi.dll
Wuaueng.dll
Wuaueng1.dll
Wucltui.dll
Wups.dll
Wuweb.dll

If any of these files are missing from the system32 folder Windows update
will not work. What I did when i was missing muweb.dll was that I went on my
other Xp computer and copied the missing files from my primary computer to my
secondary computer's system32 folder. This fixed my issue. You should be able
to do this with any installation of Xp that you have administrator privileges
on. I honestly have no idea what I would have done if I did not have another
Xp based system to get the files from as I could not find a download for them
after a few quick searches of microsoft's website. I hope that this helps.

Well if you've already tried everything in the thread which dates back to
2006, perhaps see:

(Ignore the title) Updates are not installed successfully from Windows
Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you
perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP
installation

After following these steps, do not forget to REBOOT the system. After
reboot, i was able to run WU.

Just a note....

i was having this problem on my sister's computer. her power supply had
been interrupted previously. check and make sure that your computer's time
and date is correct. if it isnt, it will result in all kinds of issues with
updates.
