XP will not update

I have XP Home SP2 current updated 3 weeks ago IE 7

I have reinstalled IE7 then rest IE7 reinstalled the activex controll
I have done a total virus/spyware scam from my CA program and from your on
site live scan/ALL CLEAN, I have done both steps for error Error number:
0x80072EFD you say to try, for my fire wall trusted sites and for IE7 trusted
site still I go to windows update and this is all I get after it times out.
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."
I think now the problem is on your end not my computer Please prove me wrong.

Anyone could prove you wrong just by updating their computer. I have
updated several Windows XP (Home, Professional and Media Center) computers
just today - no problems.

My suggestion to you is to do the following:

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer Windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just ONE of the high priority updates
(deselect
any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

Come back - let us know if that worked.

(If it did work - try it again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a time. The
Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend against
the Windows Search one. I would completely avoid the Optional Hardware
updates.)

Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

All went well till IE7 would not download the UpdateAgent.exe file from the
link given I had to hard boot 2 times to shut down task manager would not
even work to do this, I used Firefox to download it the 3rd time then all
went well till after reboot IE7 returned to the updater as told to do holding
down the CTRL key when clicking on Custom update it did as it has been doing
no green scan bar showes and it locks up till it times out with the same
error message ????

Absent any serious numerical Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be
seeing a connection failure caused by excessive demand on the servers.

Is Automatic Updates enabled? Has it been working up till now? Any chance
you recently reinstalled Windows?

The only updates I have done are windows update and when all this started I
reinstalled IE7 Plus what I was asked to do from this post. Windows XP is the
same no reinstalls on it at all

If you want my WinUpdate.log file I can send it to you this is a small part

The last 50 or so lines (from the bottom up, dated 2008-12-09 or 2008-12-10)
would be more helpful, Mark. The snippet you posted was from 2008-12-06 (06
Dec-08).

Did you reinstall IE7 in hopes of fixing the Windows Update problem or was
something else wrong? When was the last time Windows Update/Automatic
Updates was working properly? Was WinXP SP3 installed then?

The above notwithstanding...

There's a very strong possibility that the problem is due to a hijackware
infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any

I keep updates off and do it myself but after SP3 was installed
I started having this problem, I turned it on to see if it would work but it
did not work. I reinstalled IE7 to see if that was the problem, your Steps 1
and 2 have already been done I got that Idea from your help section before
coming here Both came back CLEAN as well as my CA software did too. I have
know nothing about the HighJack.log file you spoke of. I have the last 50
lines added here.
