Win updates wont install- (after WinXP Pro SP3 ??)

It seems that after I installed Win XP SP3, when I do Microsoft updates
>custom, the updates download ok, but won't install. Add/remove programs has
no Windows Installer 3.1 listed. I went to
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=893803 to dload and install winInstaller
3.1. It errored out saying that the version i have is newer (XPsp3?)
There are 31 updates that are downloaded, but won't install.
Suggestions??

If no joy, install the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent as
laid out here:

Thanks MowGreen. I used the Method 1 solution you suggested, then did the
method 1 fix from there. it worked like a charm.

I did forget to mention that on this customers comp, i did have to do a
Windows Repair from the CD, (due to virus killing files), which actually was
the cause of WU not working.
