You do understand that the are Automatic Updates settings other than
"automatic," right?

Thx, but not sure this answers the question. I'd like Vista to restart
by itself when necessary after updates are installed, rather than
hanging with the dialog box asking me whether to restart.
Again, if an update requires a restart, you'll know about it, believe me,
even if Automatic Updates is set to the "automatic" option.
If some but not all update have downloaded and are ready to be installed,
you'll encounter a "Click to install important updates and then shut down"
button when you go to turn off your computer. Doing so will install the
already-downloaded update(s)...but there's no way of knowing which updates
they are, at least not without doing a little digging in windowsupdate.log.

Many updates (e.g., Office updates) won't require a restart of the
application-in-question (e.g., MS Word) is not in use at the time. But
you'll seldom, if ever, encounter an update for Vista or Internet Explorer
that does not require a restart. More at the above link and this one:

Not to the best of my knowledge.

Thx. I know it requires a restart, just want Vista to restart
automatically without my having to click OK beforehand...
If the update(s) require a restart and you don't do anything, the computer
will restart. Otherwise, no can do.

This only applies if WU is configured to download and install automatically.
The OP has his configured to check for updates on request only.
Harry.
QED: Would OP still see the 10-minute nag anyway?

Thx Harry. I take it there's no way to force an automatic restart in
this case?
Not as far as I know.
Harry.
