I've tried updating to IE 8 via the link on the msn homepage; however once it
goes through the downloading and installation I get the following error:
"The Procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the
dynamic link library SHLWAPL.dll

Thank you,

If you had read the system requirements, you'd see that Windows 2000 isn't
supported for IE8.

Given what you have - the problem is obvious...
Lack of reading and/or reading comprehension.
;-)

See this web page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/support/system-requirements.aspx

Look under the "Operating System" title, where it lists the operating system
requirement. You stated (in the subject line) you have "Windows 2000".
You'll notice that the oldest operating system in the list is Windows XP
*with* SP2 or later.

Internet Explorer 8 is not supported on Windows 2000.

The same goes for Internet Explorer 7...

See this web page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/ie7/sysreq.mspx

Notice the list next to "Operating System"... Again the oldest operating
system listed is Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

Internet Explorer 7 is not supported on Windows 2000.

You can install Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000...

See this web page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/evaluation/sysreqs/ie6.mspx

Notice that next to "Operating System", Windows 2000 *is* listed.

Hope that helps!

That should be your cue to check the requirements of the thing
you are trying to install...

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/support/system-requirements.aspx

(Microsoft search for
"Internet Explorer 8" requirements
)

Hint: scroll down to Operating System, then press Ctrl-f and enter 2000

MS could've added an OS check and given a more helpful
error message, though!

IE8 isn't offer to Win2000 computers by Windows Update.
