Windows Updates Failed

installation. Windows Update has downloaded 84 fixes, but when I try to
install them, I get an error that the install has failed (this is true
whether I select all, or just some of the patches).
Unfortunately, going to the install history does not show anything since I
repaired the install. So I have no error codes.
Anyone have a suggestion how to proceed?

from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation

Get Dial-a-Fix:

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".
Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.
- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)
- Download/Install the 927891 patch.

- Reboot.
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.
- Come back and let us know how things went!

Step 1: Download SubInACL (SubInACL.exe)

1. Please download the subinacl.msi from the following link and save the
installation patch on the Desktop:

2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file to install
it.
3. Please select C:\Windows\System32 as the destination folder during the
Iinstallation (Note: We assume C:\ is the system partition). Later we will
use this tool to reset the current permission settings on the machine.
Step 2:

1. Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\reset.cmd and press Enter. Choose Yes
when you are prompted.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
window:

3. After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window.
Choose Yes when you are prompted to,
then luckily i was able to see the discussion on this problem; i went to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 and followed the directions and all
76 updates were installed

It told me that something that should have been done was not completed....
Wow, that sure was a clue... ahem....
So, I went back and did everything including wiping out the history of
updates, that is, I did the ""Flush SoftwareDistribution".
Then I went to bed.... This AM I awoke to find that MotherBill had secretely
installed the "Installer." I then had it put in the "Advantage." THEN I was
able to get the 10 skillion security updates...
Came back there to say THANKS.... and also then saw the link to the
explanation about XP/repair from CD...
SO thanks all.... Now I'm off to the PayPal site to make a donation....

I installed windows 7 on my pc and i am unable to use windows update it

I have been getting an error where the automatic updates to my system fail.
There are 4 updates that have continuously been trying to run...the system
goes through installation, reboots my machine and when it restarts I am told
the updates failed. I have also tried shutting down to install the
updates...goes through installation at shutdown, configuration at start up,
then when I log in the same message that the updates failed.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) cleanly installed about 3 months ago.
The updates are:
Visual Studio 2005 - Security update for Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1
Redistributable Package (KB973923)
Windows 7 - Update for win 7 for x64 based systems (KB976972)
Windows 7 - Update for win 7 for x64 based systems (KB977074)
Office 2007 - Update for Microsoft outlook 2007 Junk email filter (KB977839)
Anything I can do to make these load successfully? I will try running gone
at a time and see if any succeed...
