Media Player update KB828026

Within the past week I have been prompted approx 6 times to preform this
update. The update history shows each event as being successfull. Any Input
on why or how to stop this repetition? Thank you in advance for any
assistance.

"I had the same problem, and it took me a long time to figure out the fix.

First, The advice at http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/828026.htm _might_ be
usefull to people with Windows XP but it was no help to me. (I'm running
Windows ME.)

I found some good advice on these newsgroups from "Smirnoff" who says:
1. Delete all copies of WMP.DLL (There should only be one, probably in
C:\Windows\system; If you're nervous about deleting files, back it up
first,
or just rename it.)
2. Re-install Windows Media player. (I found if you just click on the
player icon after deleting WMP.DLL, it will automatically walk you thru
downloading a new copy from the web and reinstalling.)
3. Re-install 828026.

This is very good advice but VERY IMPORTANT: When you go back to Windows
update, install 828026 ONLY! Do not install any other updates at the same
time!

I went thru this routine, and when I went to Windows Update, it told me
there were two critical updates I needed: 828026 and 885492. Like a good
little sheep, I took the path of least resistence and let it install both.
This put my system back to where it was before, where Windows Update keeps
insisting that I need 828026 over and over no matter how many times I
install
it!

What I've learned is:
Installing WMP9 installs version 9.0.0.2980 of WMP.dll
Patch 828026 upgrades this to version 9.0.0.3075.
Patch 885492 upgrades this to version 9.0.0.3250.

What I think happened to you, me, and a lot of other unfortunates is we
installed both patches to WMP9 at the same time -- becuase Windows Update
told us to. WU installed the second patch first. Then the first patch
failed because WMP.dll was then newer than the one it was trying to deliver.
However, it fails without any error message and tells you that it was
successfull. But then the next time you go back to WU, it sees that you
have WMP9 but you don't have the registry entry that shows that 828026 was
installed, so it just keeps trying...."

Hi Patti,
Thanks for your prompt info. I did neglect to say I was running ME sorry,
however this seems to have fixed the problem, only time will tell. The
upgrade versions I believe were the the clues in finding the cure. Again
thank you for your help and insite.

As I have a tendency to frequent the XP-specific newsgroups more than others
(simply due to the fact that that is the OS I use most often), I have a
tendency to answer questions in this "non-specific OS" newsgroup with
XP-based troubleshooting suggestions.........fortunately, mTIE tried my
troubleshooting suggestion, found it didn't work for his ME system, and
posted the response which I gave to you.

Thanks for the very useful info. I had to do a complete reinstall of
WMe/Office etc after a major crash and everything else went o.k. (more or
less), but I've been battling with the Media Player KB828026 on and off for 3
or 4 days now and you've solved the problem. Well - I hope you have; I
haven't actually done it yet, but I'm very optimistic after reading your
post. It looks like the previous time I installed Player, I must have done it
right by accident but this time, with having 4 or 5 years of backlog on the
updates which needed to be done, I must have been a little less careful and
stuck a couple of updates in together. Sometimes, I think I'll never learn!

O.K. Patti, I will.
I've renamed the dll file and just had a go at re-downloading WMP , but the
MS site was very busy and it was going to take forever so I'll try again
later.

Success!!!
Worked with no problems. From your post, it looked as if you perhaps hadn't
used the solution for WMe yourself so I checked each stage so that I could
report back to you. The version numbers for WMP.DLL were as you said (i.e.
9.0.0.2980 for WMP, then 9.0.0.3075 after KB828026 and finally 9.0.0.3250
after KB 885492). Many thanks to both you and Smirnoff. It was about to start
sending me potty.
