I can print a list of all of the updates that I seem to have downloaded
but don't know what else to look for and don't know what needs to be
fixed (some security setting ?) so the updates will install.
Any and all suggestions and help will be most welcome.

That entry shows that AU has been disabled. That's just a tipoff, not
the issue. This is actually where the issue originates:

Have you tried to install the updates with the above completely and
totally disabled ?
If you've already done that, see: Error messages that you may receive
when you try to download and install updates from the Windows Update Web
site, from the Microsoft Update Web site, or from a WSUS server:
"0x800704DD," "0x80240020," or both

Check Section A: Windows 2000 and start with Step 5. If no joy, then go
back to Step1 and so forth.

*save* - AU Client and WindowsUpdate Reset Tool (v77e)

When the download completes, close *all* open browsers and programs.
Now run au_client_tool_v77e_codeplex.exe
Reboot afterwards and see if the updates are reoffered and if they
install now.
If not, then suggest the installed antivirus/'security' software is the
cause of the installation issue.

Accordingly, I went to KB910341 and Step 5. Four of the registry
entries on my system are not exactly as shown in KB910341. For example,
KB910341 shows that 'Asynchronous' should have a data value of
'00000001'. What I have is '0x00000001 (1)'
'Impersonate', 'MaxWait', and 'Safe' all have the extra '0x' in front of
the value shown in KB910341. 'Impersonate' and 'Safe' have the extra
'(1)' appended at the end of the data value shown in KB910341 and
'MaxWait' has '(600)' appended at the end of the data value shown in
KB910341.
The impression I get from KB910341 is that I should simply modify the
four odd-ball values I have found to the values given in KB910341. I
note, however, that the 'Modify' command gives one the choice of
'Decimal' and 'Hexadecimal' when typing in the new value. Which do I
choose?
Thank you again for this guidance which is far more advanced than
anything in my prior Windows experience.
Prior to doing *any* registry editing it's wise to back up the keys that
you're going to edit just in case.
How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

> For example, KB910341 shows that 'Asynchronous' should have a data value of '00000001'. What I have
> is '0x00000001 (1)'
If you double click on Asynchronous you'll see that the Value data is 1.
00000001 in the KB article is the same as 0x00000001 (1).
So that setting is correct as are the other ones you've posted.
Do not edit those, please. Go over the other ones listed and make sure
that they exist.
What is the installed antivirus/security suite and which firewall is
being used ?
Let's find out if the updates were actually downloaded and can install
from the HardDrive:
Show hidden files, folders, and system files
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#win2000
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to
WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download
You'll need to know the KB number of the updates that fail to install.
They are not showing the in WU.log.
So, right click the randomly named subfolders in Download and check the
date they were created. When you find the dates that coincide with when
the updates supposedly downloaded, open one of those subfolders, then
open the it's update subfolder.
Run update.exe and see if the update installs.
2008-08-21 16:31:13:982 692 2b8 AU # AU disabled
through User preference
This entry, if the AU service is Enabled and AU is set to update
automatically in the AU applet in Control Panel, regardless of which
setting it is, *may* be a tipoff that 'unwanted guests' are resident.

1) Other than the four entries with the '0x' in front of the data value
given in KB910341 and the extra number(s) in parentheses '( )' appended
at the end of the four data values, I have all of the other entries
specified in KB910341 with the data values shown in KB910341.
Accordingly, no editing of the registry was needed.
2) With regard to antivirus/security and firewall software being used, I
was suspicious of problems in this area when I got serious about running
down this problem a couple of days ago. Accordingly all
antivirus/security and firewall software was deinstalled last week (to
include some last little bits that the deinstallers left behind).
3) The majority of the updates were found to have actually downloaded
once I knew to look in the WNNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download subfolder.
I hadn't known where to look prior to your note. All of them in the
WNNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download subfolder installed manually when I
ran the Update.exe file that accompanied each update. The following
updates did not show up in the WNNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download
subfolder as they were reported to be 'Downloaded, ready to install':
--KB890830, Windows Malicious Removal Tool - August 2008;
--KB922582, Update for Windows 2000;
--Q816093, Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)
When I couldn't find these thee updates anywhere (even with all hidden
files specified to show up Windows Explorer searches), I separately
(manually) downloaded these three updates and saved them elsewhere on my
HD. The KB922582 then appeared to install properly. KB890830 (V.2.1)
also worked properly. Q816093_W2K_SP4_x86_EN.exe would not install and
returned an error message that the file was intended for SP3 systems
only. This error message doesn't make sense to me as the file has 'SP4'
within its name but I have learned not to be surprised at anything in
this saga.
4) Several times, you have referred to a possible 'AU' service problem.
My assumption is that 'AU' means 'Automatic Updates'. I have always
kept 'Automatic Updates' turned OFF and have always manually invoked
Microsoft Update. Also, I always have selected the 'Custom'
installation mode. My problem remains that Updates downloaded via
Windows Update will not - for reasons still unknown - install under the
direction of the Windows Update software.
Sorry for being a pest, but do you have any further suggestions? Thank
you again for your efforts to solve this conundrum.
> Q816093_W2K_SP4_x86_EN.exe would not install and

That's normal for older updates. The 'SP4' in the filename means that this
update was included in SP4, not that it was intended to install on SP4 systems.
Harry.
Microsoft Update and Windows Update are the sites that detect, download,
and install the updates.
You can use IE or the AU shortcut on the Start Menu to manually invoke
Microsoft Update, but the updates will not install without the AU
*service* running.
So, what is the AU service set to and what is the AU applet set to ?

My point being that if the AU applet is set to " Turn off Automatic
update ", there will be no updates offered via AU.
If the AU *service* is Disabled it doesn't matter how one attempts
updating. *No* updates will install. Period. None.

Well, to nitpick, updates can still be installed from the download center -
prior to Vista/2008, that is.
Harry.
On the PC under discussion, the AU 'service' has been turned on all
along and the panel shows it as 'Started'.
On the other hand, the AU 'applet' found in 'Control Panel' is set to
turn Automatic Updates 'off'. To get updates, I have always waited a
week or two after updates were announced to make certain any particular
update wasn't going to have any unforeseen side effects. Then I
would go to the Microsoft Update section of Microsoft's website and
manually invoke the update process. This approach always worked well
with my personal W98SE PC and with a W2K-Pro based PC at my former office.
So, with the AU 'service' running, why do the updates get downloaded yet
the update process won't proceed to install them? Is there something
else to check? Many thanks.

See the instructions in this article:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Ignore the Symptoms and Cause sections, go straight to Resolution. These
instructions are for XP, but they may solve your problem anyway. Certainly they
shouldn't do any damage.
If this doesn't work, try the installations again and then post the last hundred
lines from WindowsUpdate.log, which is probably to be found in c:\winnt.
Harry.
> See the instructions in this article [...]
Actually, before doing anything else, go to the Windows Update site again and
see if the problem is still there. There are reports that the latest version of
the Windows Update agent has now been deployed, and this might solve your problem.
Harry.
-- Win2K-Pro, SP4, PC;
-- Logged in as Administrator;
-- All anti-virus and firewall software deinstalled (with residual bits
removed);
-- All applications deactivated;

-- Per KB910341, step 5, all required registry files present and show
correct values (see earlier e-mails in this thread);

-- Registered wups2.dll file, 'OK' message returned;
-- Restarted Automatic Updates Service;
-- Opened IE6 and manually went to Microsoft Update at

-- Microsoft Update automatically downloaded and installed new version
of Microsoft Update client;
-- Manually selected 'custom' on Microsoft Update screen;
-- Error message '0x800706D3' returned and Microsoft Update refuses to

Prior to today, the problem was that updates would download but not
automatically install as part of the update process. I am not certain
what has gone wrong but it looks like things are getting worse rather
than better. Thanks, in advance, for any help in resolving this problem.
> -- Error message '0x800706D3' returned and Microsoft Update refuses to

"The authentication service is unknown".
The only thing I can think of that could cause this is if you are behind an
authenticating web proxy, which is unlikely ... do you need to enter a username
and password to browse the web?
Someone else may have seen this before or have another suggestion, so I'd wait a
few days ... but otherwise, I'm stuck, and all I can suggest is a reinstall of
the operating system.
... well, it could be malware. Search this newsgroup for messages mentioning
"Vundo" and you should find some good advice for dealing with this possibility.
Harry.
What has me really puzzled is whether the new Microsoft Update client
that downloaded and installed itself could have anything to do with this
new problem. Before, the updates at least downloaded and just sat there.
