KB976749 Question

I don't believe the operating system or other details are really needed for
my question. If so I will reply with them.

What I am wondering is how important is KB976749? It states that only some
websites cause this issue. If you are not having any issues requireing the
update would it not be just as well to wait till next Tuesday for Novembers
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer? Will the fix be
incorporated into that or will we still need this update.

I just don't want to waste a bunch of time updateing a bunch of computers
that would just fix them selfs next week with a new update anyway.

NB: KB976749 is NOT a critical security update but a hotfix to resolve
certain specific issues that can occur after you apply security update
974455 (MS09-054)! If you're not plague by the issues described in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976749, you don't need to install it (IMHO).

Personally, I chose to "hide" it, V. See below.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer are usually only released
once every 2 months. AFAIK, the next IE update won't be released until 8
Dec-09 and who knows if it'll include the hotfixes in KB976749?

To hide this update & stop the AU nag to install it:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB976749 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

In WinXP, hidden updates can be restored via
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

When I run Windows Update (XP, SP3), it display's:

From another site, I got the .exe file (NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe),
found it on my PC, double-clicked it, it went through a few gyrations,
then I got a dialog box that say's "The feature you are trying to use
is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert
the 'Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1' disk and click OK."

I don't have the 'Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1' disk, and don't
believe I've ever had it.

Any ideas on how to get past this?

Thanks for the reply.
I had already hidden this update at home. As far as the machines at work go,
this time of year most of them are idle so I will just wait as you are and
see what happens.

If the update is still offered after the next Cumulative Security Update for
IE is released I will then go ahead and install it in all of the machines.

Chances are the two hotfixes will be included in the next Cumulative
Security Update for IE, V. YMMV
